Last night I hung out at a small dinner party with people that I barely know. Even the person I know the 'best,' I still haven't spent much time with, and only really met this year. But this was the most relaxed I have ever been in a situation like that, and I was a little bit proud of myself. It's hard for me to do things like that, as simple and ( Read more... )

Okay, that is an odd comment to be considered "awkward" considering it's so blatantly non-obscure. I mean, it's not like you went to a frat party and made some off-color joke regarding John Cage and Jacques Derrida (not that I have any clue what that might actually be.)

Who were these people?

I am glad that things went well, though. I'm not terribly comfortable in those situations, either.

Friends of a friend, I guess. I'd met a couple of them before once, but very briefly and in very different company. My immediate follow-up was, "Am I wrong?" which nobody seemed to react or respond to. I think maybe I must have said it with too much conviction or something?

The only way to be certain of never saying something awkward in a given conversation is to never speak. Even then, it's still probably 50/50.

I secretly relish awkward moments because I know that I have a few people in my life who get me no matter how ridiculous I can be. But I am still relatively new in this area, and I need to expand my social circle. And of course, never speaking is about as awkward as it gets - especially with only four other people.

Haha, OK ;)

So help me out. I'm not sure whether you're poking fun at how apropos of nothing the comment was, or are seriously upset by it and want to fight... 'cause either way, I'm down.

Like I said, I'm down.

My therapist said I can be a little intense, and although I don't believe him, I guess perhaps my statements can be a little...absolute? Anyway, bless you for knowing that I wasn't trying to frame things in b+w.

Actually, my therapist said I am "very intense." I still don't believe him.
