I vaguely wonder if we had one at some point when we weren't here, we don't really really have any devices at the moment that would indicate this to us (i.e. everything is turned off or reboots properly and remembers its time and state), except that the central heating clock was wildly out, but it is kind of old and crap. It will be ironic if the thing that kills the central heating is the clock not the boiler.

You can always just get the timer replaced. Possibly with a SCADA unit so cyberterrorists can hack into it and make you very hot in the night.

That is a plan, though sounds like the sort of job that would be irksome to find someone to do.
My main fear of course is that the boiler will fail when it is cold and it will take ages to get a new one fitted.
