Crimping stake

Rummaging through my collection of forging tools (which has *finally* been rehomed into the workshop), I found I have a couple of fairly deep bottom swages. A bit manky at the moment, but with a decent brush & polish, I'm struggling to come up with any reason why they wouldn't work as a crimping stake? Saves me making one at least ( Read more... )

Not that I've tried it, but I expect that heating the bowl fairly fiercely with it upside down would make the mass drop out. Put the bowl on a bit of a tilt so the mass can rotate when it gets slidey.

I thought crimping stakes were usually wood ?

The tilt hadn't immediately occurred to me, that sounds a good idea.

I've seen wood, plastic and metal crimping stakes; the only difference between them and the swage is that they all had some reach to them - like the one here: http://newyorkamera.com/?p=549

Heating the outside of the pitchbowl with the paint stripper gun has done the job - in conjunction with a spoon to pry the mass out. Being impatient and burning out the remaining pitch means I probably ought to repaint the outside of the pitchbowl though...
