A new lathe

So, I have a another lathe. This one is to tide me over until I can get my ML7 back from the wilds of my younger brother's garage (which is, in turn, pending finishing the Defender engine replacement...). About all I can say about this one is "it's old". It has a gap bed, a headstock that bolts to the bed behind the gap, taper bushes on the ( Read more... )

Looks like one of the many copies derived from the ML4

Lots of similarities, but the headstock construction is very different - the ML4 I had the single split bushing housing, so I think I prefer the taper; not so sure about the tailstock - as it stands, I can't see any way of aligning it properly. MT1 on both head & tail too.

Oh, spindle thread appears to be 3/4" UNC - rough measurement, coupled with a home-made backplate in amongst the bits & pieces that is nothing more than a nut bodge-welded onto a flattish disc...

Interesting. The motor - which I've wired to an NVR switch - won't stay running (unless I keep my finger on the button). So clearly it's capable of starting, just not keeping the switch energised... Need to google some & see if I can work out why. Motor rating says it needs a 60MFD condenser - I'm hoping that's really mF?

Measured the crossslide & topslide screws - I seem to be getting 9TPI, which seems an unusual number to go for. Leadscrew is 4.
