Conservapedia on... Feminism

Aug 16, 2010 15:52

Conservapedia is an American (extreme?) right-wing "alternative" to Wikipedia. True propaganda of the worst kind - and the funniest. I found the following in the article on Feminism - I'm still laughing so hard I'm crying. It beggars belief....

Feminism originally was an expression used by suffragettes - who were predominantly pro-life - to ( Read more... )

What is your definition of a Feminist? I asked my 13-18 year old girls class this question and they really didn't know? I was surprised. I had one girl who kind of had and idea, one girl said that she read that they had burned their bra's in the 60's. I told them to go do some research and then we would talk about it. Thanks for sharing this.

Yes, that was surprising. I learned about it from my mother (I was born in '72) -a nd teachers and most women around me when I grew up. My mother remembers only too well what it was like for women before the red-stocking liberation movement in the 70's

PS: I saw your post about your son - I have no good ideas for you, but at least my support and my thoughts. It's a difficult situation.

It wasn't until the early 60s that women in the US and UK could get a loan without a man's permission!

I remember when - in the mid-eighties - my mother discovered she was registered in the municipality social services under my father's social security number. It wasn't mandatory that she was, but common practise. And they couldn't quite understand why she got so angry about it... Christ on a pogo stick!

Conservapedia is always good for a laugh and I'm not sure if conservs take what's said there as fact or not. I've never heard it cited as a serious source.

I don't think anyone with half a brain cell would take them seriously as a source. But they're still a source of gross mis-information. Anyway, this was mostly for laughs :D

* refuse to take her husband's last name when marrying

One of my school friends married a man with a boring family name. Hers was an unusual one - so he took it as his married name!

It seems to have become quite common now to "mix and match" last names. My brother took his wife's middle name and she took his last name. As far as last names goes, both of theirs were common and boring :)

These are my "favourites"
* oppose chivalry and even feign insult at harmless displays of it
-- "harmless displays", really?!
* object to being addressed as "ma'am," or feminine nicknames such as "sweetheart" or "honey"; object to other female-only names, such as "temptress"
-- "Temptress"? Odd choice of word... *cough*

As soon as I get home tonight, I'm going to make a good, stiff belt and take a look at this site. It's all mad, of course, but I know many people take it seriously. Scary.

My niece tells me that 'Ms' is taken to be 'lesbian' in the UK now! but my generation won the right to be addressed in such a way that didn't reflect our marital status ( ... )

"I point out that I have been 'Madame' since I was 18 and then ask the man in front of me "are you married?" Ifhe says 'no' I address him as 'Mondemoiseau' a very archaic form for the unmarried (and virgin, LOL) male"
Brilliant! Thanks for this little fact - this is great :D
