Short version: - there's a universal HMO for very basic stuff [and yes, you're forced to pick this, and it's subsidized], and then there's secondary insurance [which you don't need to get, but covers quite a bit of medical care].
No, it's not true insurance either, but I think this sounds like a good way to go with Medicare, which we've already got to deal with. I think reforming Medicare is a much more urgent priority, as the money problem with it has pretty much already arrived.
