You likely won't be able to continue working for your current employer, as they participate in the "trust fund" program. You'll likely be looking to be self-employed.

I'd even forgo that part - let my employer keep contributing it. Just let me out.

That's what I'm saying -- if you don't have an SSN, I don't think your employer *can* keep contributing. You'll need to find an employer who doesn't play the "trust fund" game -- i.e., be your own employer.

It's things like that that make me feel completely helpless.

That's just silly. Unless you particularly like beating your head against a concrete wall. Personally, I prefer to pick my battles and try to pick ones where I have a chance of prevailing. Life's too short to waste my time tilting at concrete windmills.

My grandfather had lots of sayings. He used to say, "Don't step on the eagle's tail." He meant that the government has an infinite ability to hassle you and you have zero ability to hassle the government ...

It just makes me mad, too - two good reasons to quit fussing about it.

You could become a minister. They have the option of opting out of SS upon ordination. I heard it on Clark Howard.

Ah, how I want to make a "they'll send the SS after you" joke.

You really can't -- the only way it would work is if you never had one assigned to you at all.

Not having a Social Security Number doesn't get you out of taxes because it's legal -- it gets you out of them because if you don't have one, you don't exist. You fall through the cracks. If you never pay taxes, the government doesn't notice.

At this point, they have you coded, and you would be missed.
