Think of it like this: Critiques aren't there to say you're a horrible person, they're there to show us that we've got more to learn, and usually if the critiquer is good at what they're doing, they're trying to teach you as best they can. My boss puts it this way: Critiques are a way not to say you're a bad artist, but that what you did isn't what they were looking for. It has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with execution.
Critiques can suck, but I just bulldoze my way through to the other side when they say "change X" I change it. I figure, they have 55-60 years of combined experience. I'll learn as much as I can while I still have them around to teach me :)
That's a great way to see it. Thanks for the feedback! I tend to be very emotional and take crits very personnally when in fact, you are absolutely right: it's not there to tell me I'm a bad person.
When I sit down and think, if they REALLY thought it was that bad, they would probably tell me now that I'm just not right for the job. But in fact, he took the time to tell me what to fix and he seems confident I can get it right.
Truth is, I haven't really been in a artistic group environment in a while now, so I'm no longer used to the harsher, straight to the point crits. It feels like I'm back to school again. *laughs*
Thanks again for the feedback! It really helps me clear my mind a little on the whole situation.
That's definitely one thing I had to get used to when I started working in a studio. It was hard to take big critiques and requests for revisions without getting upset. I had to learn to be able to turn my emotions on and off, like a switch. I learned to be passionate when creating and objective/business-like in the meetings when the creative director tells me that wasn't what he had in mind and that I have to re-do a week's worth of work from scratch. I used to get upset a lot and spent many weekends feeling miserable about work
( ... )
Thanks so much for your feedback Heather! I feel exactly that way sometimes too. I'm getting tougher with time, but like anything else.... I guess it takes practice? Because like you say, we do put a lot of ourselves into our work. It gets hard.
It's unfortunate that you can't come to Otakuthon this year =( But sure if ever you can come visit, you are always welcome! =D
I was at AN yes! And I wandered many times in the artist alley hoping to see you, but I never saw you. =( I was hoping to catch you. I felt so bad because I couldn't find you and I had promised to stop by!
Man, I'm so sorry, but I totally understand. Also know though that if you weren't given all of the details, you can be equally blunt. I always am when that happens. And I usually charge for that time as well unless it is a specific situation.
If someone says, "Here, color my army man." And I do it, turn it in, and they says, "Wait, no camoflage!"
That wasn't my fault imo. Most army men wear camo.
