A little experimenting with inks

Feb 05, 2011 08:06

Lately, I've been honestly swamped with work. (last night I slept in the studio and just woke up to try and keep up with it. I failed miserably! ahah) But even though I am so busy, I've decided to do at least a little doodle for myself everyday. I wanted to share a few of the first ones I did ( Read more... )

Thank you very much Lisa! I'm trying to come up with a little macabre story for the mermaid. Maybe the bones are a little too creepy though! ahah!

No, not too creepy at all! I really like it because it takes something that could just be sweet and makes you wonder what kind of bones are those? Why are they there? Is it little girl bones, cat bones, or another kind of animal? How did they get there? The mystery is great, it's like how some fairytales don't always have a happy ending. Would LOVE to hear the story if you think of one!!

I know this is a silly thing to say considering you are of course a professional illustrator, but these look REALLY professional! Fantastic work! The first one tells such a great story - I didn't even notice the bones at the bottom of the bowl at first - and I love how you use hatching lines to draw in the damask pattern in the wallpaper in the second one. What kind of pen do you use?

awww Thank you so much! You have no idea how happy I am to hear this! I was really trying to come up with something illustrative that could work in a picture book. (because even though I do illustration and animation full time, I still doubt that I have what it takes to do something like I just posted! No joke!)

It's the very first time I tried a hatching like that for a pattern. I'm surprised at how easy it was to do. I do all of it with with a very tiny nib. The smallest nib that you can purchase, that's the one I use. I don't think there is a size or name for it. I use this brand: http://www.akadot.com/pen-nibs-nikko-marupen-ic-p-2558.html

Sometimes I will also use a G-pen nib, but that's only when I work really big. It wasn't the case for these two drawings. Once I am done with the hatching, I do light ink washes in a few places with a regular watercolour brush and that's pretty much it. =)
