You should get them to put the cheapest ass soles they've got on the mock ups and use them as knockabout costume pieces. After all, they're still custom made for your feet and should be much more comfortable than any other "throwaway" pair of boots you'll find.

An interesting process all around.

This reminds me of the monologue given by the character of Sam Vimes from one of the earlier Terry Pratchtt novels. He finds himself, a copper from extremely humble beginnings, engaged to the wealthiest woman in the city of impeccable pedigree. He wears the cheapest boots he can find, and by carefully stuffing them with cardboard when the soles start to wear out and if it hasn't been to wet this year he has to spend maybe $20 a year on boots. At his fiancee's house there are closets full of clothes and expensive hand made boots bought by her ancestors, a pair of which may cost $200. But while he has to replace his boots at least twice a year, the expensive boots last a lifetime and more.
Vimes concludes that, in ten years, both he and the rich man would spend the same ammount on boots - and his feet would still be wet.
So if you are going to wear them for at least 10 years, $80 /year isn't too outrageous. And they may save you more in a motorcycle SNAFU.
