I liked the idea of becoming a polymath for a year before focusing on English.

Yes - that's one of the things I like about the American system.

Because I chose Nottingham, I got to do some psychology in my first year (1/3 pure maths, 1/3 applied maths, 1/3 psychology) before switching to Pure-ish Maths.

Good points on personal transport - it is vastly superior to public. The motorcycle is a particularly useful vehicle these days.
