And another thing

Yes, another CoE post. One of the things I found most irritating and unnecessary in CoE was all the "OMG Ianto's GAAAAY!". It threw me right out of the story because it was so unlike anything TW has done about sexuality since Jack's pointless and annoying transsexual story back in Greeks Bearing Gifts. Yeah, like the 51st century is cool with ( Read more... )

It was so jarring, the coming out scene I could deal with, but the Clem and Andy thing just seemed to be about gratuitously labelling him before and after he was killed. Hell, in the conversation with his sister Ianto's even attempting to label himself, and this is the same guy who in the show's first discussion about sex and sexuality says "and I don't care"? It's a fuck of a u-turn from the show's "quaint little categories" angle that they touted everywhere and were allegedly so proud of in S1&2.

And why does it need to be there? What does it add to the story? Just one more step in dismantling the show we used to have in favour of a show RTD and Julie Gardner think they can sell in the States.

Exactly. In the scene where Ianto was talking to his sister and basically said "It's just Jack and no one else", I did a double take at the screen and thought to myself -- no, they're not going there, are they? But they did.

Here's a rather interesting DWidth entry which I thought was quite objectively written on the subject: Was Torchwood: Children of Earth Homophobic?

And I agree with that strongly - taking CoE on its own, or as a "relaunch" of TW and thus paying attention to how it's different from all the previous TW, it looks extremely heteronormative (which in and of itself can feel homophobic) and does indeed seem to trade on some fairly ugly gay tropes for its emotional impact.

I agree, I found that really sad, who the hell cares if Ianto's "Gay"?

Naw! I didn't know it was your (legal) anniversary? (do you celebrate your legal anniversary or an "unoffical" anniversary)

And becuase i'm being nosey, are both (you just have two right?) your children adopted, somthing i've been wondering (you don't have to answer if you don't want, just me being curious!)

We've got a living together anniversary and a legally married anniversary - we tend to go out to dinner at least for them. The "together" anniversary tends to be the one we celebrate more - I got roses and orchids at work this year. Both kids are adopted, separately, we got them as infants.

Well. What can I say. I agree, a lot of things go against everything Torchwood has been for the past two seasons. Ianto, wondering whether they are a couple or what? Six months after Exit Wounds, about a year after KKBB, about three years after he joined Torchwood, and we've all seen fragments and that look in his face when he walks away from Jack in the warehouse? Ahm, no? Everybody making an issue of other people's (read: Ianto's) sexuality, after every member of Torchwood having had a same-sex kiss by the end of Season 1, and nobody caring? Ahm, no, either.

I am collecting links to interviews over at my LJ, you may find something interesting for your "changes between S2 and CoE" post. Which, btw, I would love to read. I have one brewing in my head, but haven't gotten around to it yet, and I'd love to see someone else's views on it! :)

Yes, I've had a look there, and I continue to brood and stew over this. I'm off on holidays Monday, though, so I probably won't have anything posted until I get back in August.

Heh, I know the feeling. Brooding, fuming and being angry, that's all I've been doing for weeks. And writing. Every way I try to come at what happened in CoE, I can't understand why. As a fan, as a writer, as a casual viewer, it just doesn't make sense.

Anyway... enjoy your holidays! :) I'm sure the rantings will still be going on when you come back...

Oh, I can make sense of it. Cynical, commercial self-aggrandizing sense.
