Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

I'm sure you'll all have already noticed this, but every time I watch Billy Wilder's "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes", I realize again how much "A Scandal in Belgravia" is an adaptation of this movie rather than of "A Scandal in Bohemia". So many connections there and some scenes from ASiB (like the final scene) suddenly make so much more ( Read more... )

Hm. I must admit to the blasphemy of not having seen the movie - but that makes sense to me anyway. Gatiss and Moffat talk about it a lot in the commentary, and the ending to Belgravia makes no sense to me whatsoever - not to even mention the fact that Irene does not triumph over Sherlock in any sense - yeah; beat, triumph over - apparently ACD should have been more precise. :-)

Shall I obnoxiously link you to an essay about why the ending is the most vital part and also a blather about why Irene won?

(Note how I curbed my obnoxicality by asking.

Though I also made up a word, which is slightly obnoxious.

:-P

)

Also, Private Life of Sherlock Holmes isn't the best of films, but it's interesting. And definitely influential in the Sherlock series. I'd recommend giving it a try.

Well, you should give the film a try some time then. I'm not overly familiar with lots of different Holmes adaptations myself, but I liked this one. And having seen Belgravia previously, it's a lot of fun to spot all the little details Moffat took from that movie... ^^

As for the ending, I recommend goldvermilion87's essay, too (I hope she posts a link because I can't find it now). Of course you don't have to agree with it, but sometimes it's interesting to see a different view anyway. :-)

Thanks. ^^ Also, I particularly loved that Moffat used a lot of very small details from the film, too: Like the line about Holmes being smaller than people imagined him to be, people telling him about their favourites among his cases, the idea of Holmes composing for The Woman, ...
