So, I plan to attend Earlham this coming January (got my acceptance a week back or so) and being an International student, I'm not exactly familiar with driving around the US. I was wondering, how safe would it be to drive from lets say, Washington DC to Indianapolis around the second week of Jan? My twin is attending uni in NY, and my dads coming ( Read more... )

where in ny is your twin going to school? I live in new jersey, but I'm just on the other side of the hudson river. if it makes it easier for you, I've got space in my car and you could drive with me and my friend.

She's going to Hofstra University in Long Island, which doesn't start till 2 weeks after Earlham. We have family in NY so the case of having someplace to stay during that time is fine. Thanks for the offer but the plan is to head out from DC to Earlham, settle me in then to NY for her rather than start off there :)

Give yourself a little extra time and you'll be fine. Best case, you'll have a little extra time to browse Mid-Western tourist attractions, show your dad around your college town, etc... Worst case, you'll have time to pull over and wait out one of our intermittent Mid-Western storms. Usually not bad for more than 2-3 hours at a time.

There are just the usual "dangers" of driving. In the early evening and night time, watch out for deer. If you plan to stop over night somewhere, give yourself time to check out a couple of motels, in case one of them turns out to look sketchy. If it gives you a bad vibe, just keep driving. I'm from a pretty overpopulated area of southern NY, and in my opinion, driving through the midwest and dealing with some big trucks passing you is a lot better than the traffic we have around NYC. Don't drive sleepy, cuz it can get kinda boring, being a long straight stretch. And watch out for other drivers (especially truckers) who might be nodding off themselves.

Thanks :) I think i'm more concerned over the weather than the actual drive. At least thats the only thing bothering my dad, he's driven for hours at a end before on this side of the world but the only risk that pose as a threat were dust storms.
