Exfoliating and moisturising body scrub; also brining solution.

One of my favourite regular household chores is making my own body scrub. The stuff is marvellous. I make it for my mother and sister, and they're constantly asking me for another batch. My sister even credits it with curing the highly visible stretch marks from her first pregnancy. It's both exfoliating and very moisturising, and, I'm told, an ( Read more... )

oh, what a lovely recipe. i've been using coconut oil that i scent w/lavender or rose oil or whatever i feel like as a moisturizer but i never thought to make a body scrub with it. the ones in the stores are soooooo expensive and i had no idea they used plastic instead of just salt.
information and decadence all in one post!

Given the places that you shop, I have a feeling that they are using salt or nut shells or something of the sort. But the vast majority of exfoliating body wash sold contains plastic bits.

My home-made scrubs usually consist of "handful of sugar and squirt of peppermint soap -- combine on body" so I think I will try your version as it seems quite lovely and moisturizing as well. Using a bit of sugar mixed with one's facial cleanser (in hand) works beautifully as well and is less harmful than most facial scrubs that use things like powdered nut shells (sharp, ouch!) or the dreaded nurdle (again, sharp!)

The only plastic scrubby item I would endorse would be something like a Salux cloth. Washable, reusable and will last forever -- no bits washed away to poison our oceans. But really that is only for the most hard-core of exfoliators.

I'd long been a fan of mixing sugar with my soap. I eventually had a moment of idle curiosity regarding how difficult it might be to make my own soap. The answer turned out to involve a bit more effort than I really wanted to expend, but I found some lovely, simple recipes for a body scrub, and combined and changed a few of them to make mine.

Oh, I'm not sure I'd been familiar with the Salux cloth. Fascinating!

Salux cloths are remarkably popular in Japan. I'm bringing a supply back to America with me (they tend to over a very long period of time become softer and less exfoliating, but it takes at least a year). They also come in all-natural materials in addition to the plastic ones, and you can get them at the 100yen ($1) shop.
