Schizophrenic
You were startled out of your musings when you heard footsteps behind your back. You didn’t want to look back, didn’t want to know who was there because just by listening to the rhythm of the footsteps, you could almost tell who it was walking towards you. It was a ridiculous thought, but you can’t help but see the letters of his name run across your head. You don’t know how come they popped up like that, but they did. And because of that, you’re scared the very moment you twist your head, you’ll see his face.
“Hey Hyde” and the hairs on your body stand on all their ends as your paranoia was proved true. You felt your nails dig deep into your palms as you tried to calm yourself. The beating of your heart making your chest too tight, it hurt too much that breathing became a chore.
Your breathing became laboured and you could almost hear yourself breathe out.
“What’s wrong, Hyde?” That sweet maternal voice lapped at your ears, slowly crawling inside one ear and rest inside your head. You know that voice, the all knowing and loving, the caring and worrying voice of your leader. You felt the colours of your skin and face drain away from the fear as you felt the soft touch of a concerned hand grip your left shoulder.
You looked up, trying your best to get the colours from running away and tried to get your composure.
“What’s wrong, Hyde?” tetsu asked again, with that same motherly voice and that look on his face that you were all too familiar with.
“Nothing’s wrong” it came out hesitant from your mouth, and tetsu frowned at you for that.
“You don’t seem right, Hyde” tetsu voiced out truthfully. “Please don’t lie to me like that”
“I’m not lying”
“Why are you pale then?”
You close your eyes, hoping that if you just push yourself in the darkness enough you could manage to slip away from this reality that made your blood twist and turn. You didn’t want to face him right now, because your heart won’t stop beating like mad inside your chest and if you weren’t careful you’ll die from exhaustion.
“Hyde, I’m still here” he told you, busting away your illusion, pulling you out of your dream and bringing you back to the reality that you just want to go away. “Please open your eyes and talk to me, tell me what’s wrong”
You almost felt your heart wrench in sadness and grief as you heard the melancholy in the other’s tone. You wanted to hurt yourself, how could you let him worry about you? How could you make him feel so sad, when that was the last thing you ever want to make him feel?
You forced your eyes open, little by little until the whole word came to view again and part of that world was the brunette kneeling in front of you. He looked at you with chocolate orbs glazed in obvious anxiety as he tried to look into your dark orbs. He cocked his head to the side, wondering if somehow or someway he could catch the fear.
“Is there something you don’t want me to know, Hyde?” he asked, trying to decipher the hidden messages caught between the passing of your fears. He saw the nervousness that crawled upon your skin and he could tell the way you shift your eyes and the way you refused to answer that this was not normal. Tetsu looked up pleading with his own orbs, with words of question falling to deaf ears as you refused him the answers he was looking for.
“Was it because of that?” You knew there was no way out when the incident is brought to mind. “Hyde, I’m not angry”
“Why?” the only word you managed to push pass your lips, as you tried your best to shift your attention to something else. Like how the afternoon outside your window was starting to look bleak as the sun hid behind the grey clouds.
“Because I can’t find it in myself to” there was a ghost of a smile staining tetsu’s face, yes stained because that smile shouldn’t be worn right now. You hated how he can find it in himself to happy even when you did the greatest wrong against him. You wanted to look at that face, touch the lips with your thumb and connect your own mouth with his. But you can’t do that.
“You have to be angry with me” you said, finally settling your gaze on his devoted features. The beam that tore your heart with bittersweet passion made close your eyes again, tight and with a fervent desire never to open them again. “After everything, after what I made you go through...”
You felt his hands clasp yours and in a few minutes you felt the flesh of tetsu’s face in between your palms. You took a peek and saw that tetsu himself has closed his eyes with that soft twist of lips still on his lips as he guided your hands to caress his face.
“I still love you hyde”
“Don’t say that”
“But it’s true” tetsu opened his orbs, a still seriousness over those brown eyes, he closed his eyes again and shrugged his shoulders, “Suki”
“No... No” you shook your head, taking away your hands from his. This can’t be happening. “I hurt you, and beat you”
“I’m willing to forget”
“No, no...!” you said, and that when you realize there were tears falling down your eyes as the pictures in your heard started to run so fast and clear, you might be swept away from the speed they have taken. “You were hurt so bad, and there was blood on your face and...”
You could even see the blood that tetsu coughed as he tried to stand up. You didn’t even try to help him as he reached for the end of the table to help him up. Tetsu didn’t dare say a word, tried his best not let even a squeak out of his mouth or a shuffle of his clothes as he forced himself with weary arms and a battered body from the floor.
“Really?” tetsu smiled sweetly, nary a hint of sadness on his face, “I don’t remember, are you sure you didn’t make that up?”
“You bastard!” you clutch at his shoulders with an iron grip force, it made him flinch in a pain and when you saw the smile slip away from his mouth you let go. “Oh my god, tetsu, I’m sorry... I’m so sorry”
You remember it vividly, like it was trapped in your head playing on replay forever so you’ll never forget where the wounds lay. So you’ll never forget the pain in his face as he took all of your hits. So you’ll never forget how he never said a word or tried to stop you when he was about to lose consciousness.
Tetsu fell silent and his eyes were now looking down on the floor as if he was the one at fault. And you know that once again you broke the small fragile glass that made you and him connect. The brunette just sighed with remorse and bit his words, knowing that if he even utters or makes a sound your hand might find its way across his face in a hard slap.
“Tetsu... I’m sorry, please talk to me” you said, trying to coax him with a smile- a pathetic twist of lips that looked mirthless and desperate instead. “Please tetsu, I’m sorry... I’m sorry, please say something”
But you know that it’s been broken to a thousand pieces, that it will be hard to get tetsu to speak because you know you planted fear in him.
“PLEASE” you shook his shoulders, hoping that your grip wasn’t that tight because you can’t bear it anymore. “Tetsu”
You pulled him close, wrapped your arms all over him and let his head rest on your chest as you cradled back in forth with him in your hold.
“It’s like last time” tetsu said the pictures already in your head.
“I’m sorry” you chanted heatedly to his hair, hoping that somehow you can still fix everything with this. It’s not first time this has happened, the pain that you always make him feel with your fast hands and your angry words, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry”
“There’s no use, Hyde” tetsu whispered, shaking his head softly pushing away your arms from his sad form “It doesn’t matter anymore”
“Please, tetsu” you said, trying to get tetsu again, but you gave up as tetsu forced your arms away from his body. You could do nothing but look at the tall figure just take slow steps away from you, each step and another just to get away from you and your evil.
“It doesn’t matter hyde” he looks up and you could see his face was still holding that sweet smile he held when he finally ran away from you. “It’s over Hyde, it’s over”
“No... no...” you covered your ears with your hands as you tried to keep the words out of your head, you can’t let them haunt you again. “No... Don’t say that”
“Accept it Hyde, I’m not coming back anymore”
“No”
“Even if I want to, even if I beg, I can’t come back”
“No”
“And it’s all your fault”
You looked up as he said those words, and there was something about that smile didn’t seem so sincere anymore. Tetsu didn’t look so caring now that those words were finally said. They both knew it was your fault even without having to word out the fact, but now when it is finally out in the open for both of you to hear, it hurts more than you can say.
“I know” you admitted, you looked down on the floor in defeat. You didn’t know what else to say, because everything’s been laid out like an open book for you to look over. But there was the question that haunted you ever since the accident, that if you don’t ask now you will go mad if you don’t know the answer. You forced yourself from your reverie and watched as tetsu looked back at you. For a fleeting second, the idea that he knows the question before you could even ask floated in your mind. But you asked it anyway, “Did you jump in front of the car?”
Tetsu took another step back in the shadows, his body starting to blend with the black. He smiled at you the same way he smiled when he finally gave up and tried to escape you with the same tears flowing out of his eyes that now haunted your dreams.
“Did you?”
He let out a small sound that was near a tired sigh, “I don’t think you can handle the answer”
You never left your eyes off of tetsu’s face, even when there was someone knocking at the door.
“Hyde” ken opened for himself and slowly stepped in, he was dressed all in black, “Hyde, are you there?”
“Tetsu” was the word that slipped out of your mouth as the illusion before slowly disappeared into the black shades of the room. Tetsu wouldn’t let go of the smile, as he lifted his hand to wave a small good bye at you, he silently worded a small ‘I Love you’ at you.
“Tetsu... come back” you heard yourself say as you realized that he wasn’t there anymore. That the black clothes you were wearing that moment wasn’t because you were trying to be trendy.
“Hyde?” Ken stepped in as he heard your cry for your dead lover. “Hyde, what’s wrong? We have to go now-”
“No... Ken, Ken...!” you looked at your band mate with a lightened fire in your eyes, “Didn’t you see him?”
“See who hyde?”
“Tetsu! He was there! He talked to me!” you pointed at the empty space, ken followed the direction of your hand but found nothing, “He was there, ken! I swear I saw him!”
“Hyde...” ken said, trying to calm you down, the expression on his face a grave one “Hyde...”
“He was here! He was here! Please believe me!” You tried to convince your friend; you gripped on his shoulder, shaking him trying to make him believe your claims.
“ Hyde, please we have to go now” ken said sympathetically, “We can’t be late”
“No, ken, tetsu-”
“-Is dead, hyde” Ken told you, because there was no other way to say it to you.
“No, Ken! That’s not true!”
And the hysteria took over you again.
