“Is this really necessary?” Dean asked, looking down at himself. Castiel had taken his (admittedly) ruined shirt and slacks, and had returned with clothing for Dean. However, this clothing was made of the same stuff that the vhorztah was currently sporting. Which meant that it was made out of seaweed and kelp.
“You cannot go around in them forever, Dean. Soon they will begin to smell.” Castiel replied, the corners of his eyes crinkling up even though his mouth didn’t so much as twitch. Dean knew that his new buddy was amused, though. He’d always been good at reading people.
“What, and shit made from the ocean won’t?” the man retorted. Dean still took the clothes, though, feeling how light and cool they were. The shirt was actually a nice shade of blue, and the pants felt almost like jeans. “Jeez, how did you guys manage to make them feel so much like human clothing?”
“Years of practice. Put them on, please. You will not need your underthings, either.”
Dean gaped at the vhorztah. “You’re shitting me.”
“I am doing nothing of the kind.” Castiel’s eyes danced with amusement. “Now change, please.”
“Yeah, well, fine; but you have to turn around.” When Castiel has done so, Dean quickly shimmied out of his clothing (boxers included) and slid into the new outfit even quicker. He stood there for a moment, feeling it settle around him. “Wow, this isn’t even as uncomfortable as it should be.”
Castiel turned back around and picked up Dean’s discarded outfit. Before he could leave, though, the man stopped him. When Castiel looked at him, Dean arched an eyebrow. “And how am I supposed to return to society wearing what is obviously not normal clothing without an explanation?”
Dean’s sharp eyes caught Castiel’s pause as the vhorztah heard his words. That was suspicious. “Castiel, you are going to help me get home, right? You said you would.”
“I just think you should rest more. You’re still not fully healed.” Castiel said evasively. He put Dean’s clothing back on the ground and stood to face him. In the three days Dean had known the vhorztah, he’d discovered that Castiel had no knowledge of what personal space was. Standing this closely, he could see just how bright the creature’s tattoo was, standing out starkly against his deep blue-green skin.
“That’s bullshit, and you know it.” Dean growled, drawing in so closely that they were practically flush. He felt Castiel’s chest expand as the half-breed’s breath hitched. “I was healed two days ago. How about we stop beating around the bush and you tell me the truth. Why won’t you take me back?”
“The ocean is dangerous.” Castiel said quietly, though the fact that he wouldn’t meet Dean’s eyes meant he was still lying. Usually he never stopped looking at him.
“Lying is a sin, you know.”
The vhorztah’s eyes snapped to Dean’s face, and he had the grace to look ashamed. It was almost a disappointment when he backed out of Dean’s space and stood a respectable distance away; fingers linked behind his back.
“Castiel, what is it?” Dean put effort into making his voice sound soothing and gentle. “You can tell me.”
“No, I cannot.” Castiel rumbled. “Just, please.... stay a few more days? Then I will take you home, I... I promise.” When he lifted his head to look at Dean, his large blue eyes were full of hope and sadness. If Dean didn’t know better, he’d swear the guy had taken lessons from Sam.
“Alright, Castiel; I’ll stay a few more days. But then you need to take me home. I have a younger brother, and he’s probably frantic with worry. For all I know, he thinks I’m dead.” Dean said. Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair and scowled when he felt sand shift and fall out of it. “Oh, dude, yuck. I’m disgusting. I need a bath.”
“There is a fresh-water pond further in on the island. I believe that you will be able to reach it more easily now, or else I would have told you earlier.”
Dean’s eyebrow arched. “Well, then. Lead the way, man. It’s not perfect, but at least it’s something.”
The smile Castiel gave him was small, but bright and happy. It made his eyes light up, which made Dean stare for a few moments too long before snapping out of it.
Even though Dean’s company had always been women, he had never been prejudiced over who he admired. Guys could be just as gorgeous as women; in some cases even more so. Relationships with men were messy and complicated, though, and always brought in comments from morons who thought they knew best. Still, Dean had always wondered what it would be like to have one.
“Dean?” Castiel’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts, and he saw the vhorztah looking at him with worry. He was already up near the edge of the beach where it joined the woods, so Dean hurried to catch up.
“Sorry, man. I’m coming.”
The pond was quite beautiful to look at. It wasn’t enormous, but it was more than large enough to take up half of the clearing, and the water was clear and blue. Dean was so busy staring at it that he didn’t even notice Castiel had slipped in until the vhorztah’s head had popped up close to him. His dark brown hair was plastered to his head, droplets rolling down his cheeks, but that wasn’t what caught Dean’s attention.
“Cas, why are you naked?”
“I asked you not to call me that.” his companion sighed. “My name is Castiel. I’m naked because that is the easiest way to get clean, is it not?”
“Well, yeah. But isn’t fresh water dangerous for you, since you come from the sea?” Dean dragged the shirt up over his head, catching a whiff of some scent that was definitely not seaweed or kelp. It smelled almost like some kind of flower.
“Water is water for our kind. Yes, the sea strengthens us most, but any water is good for us.” Castiel’s voice had an odd little hitch in it, but when Dean looked at him he was swimming towards the opposite bank. While he wasn’t looking Dean wiggled out of his pants and jumped into the pond.
The water wasn’t even cold, which just made everything better; and since there was no pollution he didn’t have to close his eyes. Dean swam strongly until his lungs burned for oxygen, and only then did he come up for a breath.
“You swim very well.” Castiel murmured, his cool breath tickling over Dean’s ear. The man jerked with a startled yelp, whirling around to look at the creature.
“Dude, how didn’t I hear you come up?”
Castiel’s eyes twinkled. “We’re water creatures, Dean. That means we move with the water, and through it, without disturbing it. While humans may splash around and make a lot of noise, we do not.”
“Cheater.” Dean grumbled good-naturedly, splashing water towards the vhorztah and watching, fascinated, as some of it absorbed into his skin while the rest rolled down his face. Castiel didn’t even close his eyes, even though some of it had splashed them. Rather, some kind of clear membrane slid down over his eyes to protect them, and when the water was gone they slid back again.
“Dude, that is awesome.”
His companion smiled and then slipped under the surface with hardly a ripple. Taking a deep breath, Dean splashed down after him. He followed Castiel as the creature swam, watching the way his muscles rippled along his back and thighs when he kicked powerfully. The vhorztah wasn’t even using his arms, the jerk.
Castiel flipped over suddenly, giving Dean a good look at his flaccid penis and his testicles. Embarrassed, Dean jerked his gaze away and shot for the surface. When he burst from the water he gasped, sucking in air greedily. He didn’t even feel it when Castiel surfaced beside him.
“Dean.” Castiel’s deep, rough voice was even deeper. He was impossibly close, and he smelled like a fresh ocean breeze; like ozone from a thunderstorm.
“Yeah?” Dean rasped, slipping away in the water and putting space between them. It didn’t do any good, because Castiel followed him. “Uh, Castiel... can I have some space?”
The vhorztah cocked his head to the side, staring at Dean unblinkingly as he drifted closer rather than farther away. “Dean,” he repeated, slipping cool fingers around Dean’s wrist and pulling him closer to the creature. Dean took a shaky breath, his eye probably wide; his face no-doubt pale.
“This is really, really uncomfortable, man.” Dean said, trying to tug his wrist away. Castiel’s fingers were like iron, though, and he couldn’t break free. Oh god; oh god, oh god, oh god, what’s he doing?
He felt Castiel’s abdomen when his fingers brushed over it, and then the vhorztah was pressing Dean’s palm against his cool, firm skin. There wasn’t an inch of give to that stomach; it was all firm skin, well-defined with muscle.
“What are you doing, Castiel?” Dean growled, trying to tug his hand back. “Dude, what are you doing?”
“I saw you looking. I could feel your eyes on me.” Castiel whispered, leaning forward until his lips were just barely touching Dean’s right ear. “Why were you looking, Dean?”
“Because it’s kinda hard to miss when you’re swimming with a dude that’s naked.” Dean snapped, trying to sound angry and knowing that he was failing miserably.
“You’re lying.” Castiel’s voice was soft- intimate. “Remember, Dean, I’m half angel. I may not have all the abilities that come with it, but I can pick up on thoughts you think loudly enough.”
Dean jerked as if he’d been stung, letting out a noise of protest as he tried again to jerk his hand back. “It doesn’t mean anything.” he growled, eyes snapping up to meet Castiel’s. “It’s just my mind running away from me.”
“What if I said I didn’t mind?”
Those words made Dean freeze. He stared at the vhorztah in shock, eyes searching his face for any sign of teasing but finding only seriousness.
“You should mind. I’m not even your kind. I’m all human. Go make babies with some nice female vhorztah who won’t be gone in the next few days.”
Castiel’s eyes narrowed and suddenly Dean was flat on his back on the grassy bank. The vhorztah pinned him easily, leaning over the man and staring down at him. Dean struggled to break free, but there was no way he could move Castiel.
“You should show me more respect than that, Dean. You think I don’t know that you’ll be gone in a few days? I’ve never found anyone with a soul as bright as yours. I couldn’t leave you to die even if I had wanted to. My brothers told me I should, because you were just a human. I couldn’t, though. I saved you, and I brought you to this place. I cared for you, healed you, and fed you. I offered you clothing against my family’s wishes. All this, I have done for you knowing that eventually I will have to take you home. So, why can’t I have a little something that is only mine until then?”
Dean stared up at Castiel, his eyes wide and his mouth open slightly. Even if he wanted to, there were no words he could find to say in the face of that. His mind was running a mile a minute, but for the life of him he couldn’t formulate a sentence.
“You’re probably hungry. I will go and find something.” Castiel released him and stood quickly, refusing to look at Dean. The man could easily feel his pain, though. However, before he could even hope to say something, Castiel was sprinting off. Dean scrambled to his feet to chase after him, but there was no way he could hope to catch up.
By the time he found his way back to shore, Castiel was already long gone. All Dean could do was stand there, naked as the day he was born, and let his eyes roam over the waves.
Shit.
