Kids Can Break Your Heart w/o Even Trying

Let me preface this by saying that E was out of control-OUT OF CONTROL the other day. I mean completely and willfully disobedient and defiant. Saying no just to say it and pushing every button. By the end of the night, we knew we were going to lose it soon.

I had sent her to put on her pajamas and get ready for bed, promising I would read to her. I was still finishing things throughout the house when I heard a thump and M shouting at her and demanding she go to bed. (No, this isn't going to be a post about M's lack of patience--seriously, she was so irritating that day.) Apparently, without asking his permission, she'd taken his phone (his work phone, mind you. Not in any way really HIS) and as she attempted to sneak away, it fell from her hands. Hence M's shouting.

I waited for the tears but heard nothing.

I found her lying in bed, covers drawn, eyes red with tears. She wasn't crying, but she was close.

"What happened?" I asked.

She immediately threw herself in my arms and sobbed, "Daddy hurt my feelings. I said I was sorry but it didn't work."

*Sigh.* That was the most pathetic thing I've heard in a long time. Doesn't it just scream innocence?
Somehow, she's come to believe that all she has to say is I'm sorry and all will be forgiven no matter how often she has been told NOT to do something.

She was so upset that it broke my heart.

Ah, the joys of parenting...
