Lampworking is a way of working with glass. Lampworked beads are made by melting thin rods of glass over a mandrel, using a torch. Before fancy and convenient torches like the ones used today, they would have been made over the flame of an oil-lamp type flame burner (thus the term lamp). Glass paperweights and marbles are often lampworked.
