Question for LJ Friends

Jan 26, 2010 17:03

Hey there!  I have noticed a bit of a drop in my friends list lately and figure that many people have moved to other social networking sites.  As you may know, I post my original Earthenwood posts at Blogger and cross post here.  This has been a bit of a pain over the years, especially when my blog feed is automatically posted other places via RSS  ( Read more... )

You can set up RSS here on Livejournal, too, if that would make things easier for you.

I actually did do that a while ago, but it didn't really catch on. Also, I can't get the comments that are posted there (not that I can figure out anyway)

Ah, I didn't know it existed.

It doesn't email the comments? That's kinda a bummer, since you'd have to go looking for them. I guess they figure the comments aren't really specifically TO the person that set up the RSS.

I know RSS can set up to only show the first bit of a post, and I wonder if you could turn off comments there and then since people had to click through to see the rest of the post, they'd just post at the blog?

(I know some RSS feeds only show a bit and then make you click through for the rest, but I don't know how to set it up. I think it has to be set up on the blog-side, not the LJ side.)

As to your questions, I love reading your Earthenwood blog but I am very, very bad about going to read things I can't get here on LJ. Of course, I'm just one person and I wouldn't suggest you keep cross-posting just for me, but I will definitely sign up for the RSS feed now that I know it exists, in case you stop cross-posting.

No, I don't see a way to make any changes in the feed here at all. Dave and I have talked about this, actually, and came to some of the same conclusions.

Yeah, I do understand about not wanting to go elsewhere. I was very hesitant to go to Facebook, but I get so many more comments and find new business there. It seems a bit redundant to stay here, sadly.

One other thing is with the traveling I will be doing, I can set my Blogger to post to any date or time that I want, and it works really well. I did that when I was on my cruise, but now I have posts that I would have to manually post here if I wanted to keep it caught up , and that just seems silly at this point.

I prefer actually reading things on LJ. Just now, I saw on FB that you've made posts, but I didn't read them there because I knew they'd be here.

yeah, that's the issue... I made them early last week before the Cruise and set them to auto post on Blogger, which takes them automatically to FB and to all the other places.

Now I am left, a week later, and if I wanted to catch my LJ up, I would have to manually go and cut and paste them here. That's the pain in the bum part :/

I plan to use this feature more and more as I travel, so it leaves me with the question of what to do with LJ.

I think I might ask LJ readers to subscribe to my feed:

It posts from Blogger automatically, but the only issue is that I don't get the comments sent to me, so I wouldn't know if you commented.

I only sporadically check FB - I have it set by default to just show updates, which doesn't show journal entries and stuff like that...so I don't go looking for that stuff unless I'm bored or specifically looking for pictures that people have posted. Sadly, I don't see that situation changing anytime soon because of how busy I've been and the little online time I've gotten lately. Especially since LJ seems to be okay but work doesn't like me checking FB.

With that said, I'd miss you bunches here on El-Jay and always love reading your posts, but I understand that it's extra work and wouldn't take it personally if you stopped.

I am glad you would understand! And I understand your situation too.

I vastly prefer LJ to FB. The only reason that I have FB is to keep up with non-LJers.

Yeah, I understand that. I do like LJ in many ways, but I don't like cutting and pasting from Blogger in order to post.

I'm still stunned by your work, so yes, I still see your entries. The little trinket from last year's ConFusion, for the masquerade, I incorporated it into the Professor's costume. ;)

Thank you! I am touched that you used one of my pieces in your costume. I really missed ConFusion this year, but...ya know... a carribean cruise was just something I couldn't pass up.
