So Jerry Falwell has died. I'm trying really hard not to be too pleased with this, but it's rough. This is a man who made a career of viciously attacking and demonizing anyone who refused to conform to his idea of morality

You beat me to it. I wanted to be the first to post the news on my LJ.
Now if we can just get rid of Pat Robertson, everything would be perfect. The only thing missing from this was the bolt of lightning smiting him for his blasphemous misrepresentation of Christians and their God.
I have never in my life understood how he could claw his way to influence and then stay there for so long when he was such an abomination against the very values he purported to represent. But I guess he's not the first hypocrite to manage the feat, nor, unfortunately, will he be the last.
i think there is a lot that rational (and i guess maybe liberal?) people can't really make heads or tails of. one is the powderkeg that the south was, and exactly how men of God could advocate violence to keep people from using facilities or requesting their rights. i mean... the Bible kind of covered that as a kind of tyranny. wtf.
Well, the Bible, like any written document, can be made to say whatever you want it to say.
I can understand the allure of a guy like Falwell to certain subsets of our culture from an objective standpoint. But my visceral reaction has always been that he was a snake oil salesman at best. And from that standpoint I can't see how people remain taken in by him. It's a rational intelligence v. emotional intelligence thing. I have known one or two people to try to defend Falwell, and my kneejerk reaction is always like, "Seriously?"
He was not my favorite either. I am actually writing my paper on a group called Answers in Genesis and they are about as fundamental as you can get. I grew up in that kind of environment and as I have gotten older, I have come to realize how confining and judgmental that kind of mentality can be. "And in his death, I hope he finally finds some peace" - I concur. I also think a lot more people who don't fit into his idea of what is "right" will breathe a sigh of relief that one more purveyor of hate has moved on.
