Fruit flies may have free will. How about that? Although, I will admit that after reading that article through twice, I'm still not sure how the study they performed led them to the conclusions they discuss. Thanks for the shout-out. I was stunned when I read that testimony yesterday.

Bush can't even do gangster right.

That basically sums it up. The thing about the Nixon years is, those guys were pros. Gordon Liddy was an expert at being a conniving, sneaky crook, and the whole administration was geared towards protecting themselves. But they did it with intelligence and cunning. The Bush folks are like a schoolyard bully with a baseball bat, indiscriminately flaunting rules and bashing anonymous heads without any fear of reprisal, either from the constituency or their own party. It's fascinating in a way, but also extremely scary. There was a poll conducted last which found that more people support impeaching President Bush than supported the impeachment of President Clinton. What I want to know is, why has it taken us 6 years to get to this point -- and furthermore, why are we even still not angrier than we are? People should be calling for heads to be cut off.

This seems a little out of left field but it connects: In The Feminine Mystique Betty Friedan talks about the waning interest in feminism after women got the vote in the 1920s. From then until the reawakening of women's lib movements post-WWII--and really, well into the 1960s--it was like treading water as far as further moves toward equality went. Friedan made the point that people tend to fight harder to gain rights than they do to defend them ( ... )
