Woody Woodpecker . . .

Jul 05, 2023 11:30

The Pileated Woodpecker is Florida's largest woodpecker (usually between 15" & 20" long). A very impressive bird and their call is the most pronouned and loudest of all the woodpeckers that visit our area. It sounds like a tarzan jungle call to me. This one came to our birdbath and gave me a show! Pictures: ( here )

Great shots! We have them here in Virginia. They have quite a distinctive call.

You will! I know you will! You'll hear it drumming wood or the undeniable call before you see it. I found this on the internet. You have probably looked it up, too, but just in case you hadn't ~~ Pileated woodpecker: In Oregon, its habitat includes older forests in the Blue Mountains, East and West Cascades, Klamath Mountains, Willamette Valley and Coast Range ecoregions. They prefer mature forests and younger forests with large snags and logs, requiring large diameter snags for nesting and foraging.
