It's interesting to look at the rise of the social networking phenomenon from before it existed. There was no-one I knew reading my LJ. There was a lot more thought in posts (such as this one of yours) than random output of daily happenings (more its prime purpose these days). Not a bad thing, means I can remember to catch up with people once in a while (though I do miss the days when people posted because they'd been thinking about something).

I'm waiting for the social graph equivalent of Jabber so I do not need to sell out to Rupert Murdoch or Sergei or any one provider just to stay in contact with people. Then maybe split the social and philosophic portions.

My issue is with IM of varying persuasions. I prefer asynchronous communication for written communication and find that IM combines the worst aspects of face-to-face and written. That's a personal preference mind you, and not a statement on IM.
