I don't know if gin is so much a remedy as a symptom. I have this wonderful book, "The Curiosities of Ale and Beer". Beer and Ale was the drink of choice, then (much stronger) gin arrived on the scene. It became a social problem much like crack made cocaine more available and more chronic.
The Internet gives us a constructive outlet wee can use to promote art, science and culture. But like gin, sitcoms and crack, people will still be drawn to empty efforts like WarCrack. OK, WarCrack promotes some redeeming attributes like teamwork and problem solving, but playing it until you collapse is no better than passing out in a gin parlor.
Hunter gatherers had more free time than we do. There's a theory that their rich participative cultures developed from the ample free time. We have more free time that industrial era folk, we have a more tenable platform for a global participation, maybe we are bringing some of that culture.
