Along those lines, I was wondering why planes again. Wouldn't they pick something else to show that nothing is safe? Is the US really that impenetrable, that they'd bring them down over the ocean?
Brainstorming is a natural occurence for me, and I always have to manually shut down at this point, so as not to have nightmares. Along those lines I should stop watching TV, too, except my Netflix DVDs.
I know people are already afraid of flying, but something of this scale would be a serious blow and would also make the terrorists appear more organized and intelligent, and (further) discredit our own intelligence agencies, which is what is most scary. Yes, we know terrorists exist as a threat, but they need to constantly remind people that anything can happen at anytime, to keep that terror alive. The plan was incredibly well conceived but they probably carried it out before they were ready, and I think I heard there was an informant that tipped MI:5 off. They're obviously keeping mum about the details of their miracle save.
I have to say, if this plan had originated in the US, I'm not so sure we would have caught it in time.
Possibly because they could keep doing it. Imagine that they'd succeeded. A few planes disappear over the ocean. No wreckage to investigate, so we can't figure out how they did it. So every so often, it just keeps happening.
I wondered the exact same thing myself. At first, I thought they might be continental flights to major European cities or something, but the reports keep saying they wanted to destroy the trans-Atlantic ones. That send the message that going back and forth between the two nations fighting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is tantamount to suicide in the eyes of the fanatics, but other than being devastating to those lost and their families, and, as agrumer mentioned, allowing them to keep getting away with it, it's not the strongest message to send
( ... )
I had the same question as well. I don't know if this is what they were thinking or not, but I seriously doubt they intended to blow up the plane over the ocean. In the air, yes; away from civilians and the media, no.
Blow up the plane over London, Boston, New York, or Washington DC. Make it spectacular. People killed by falling, burning metal in Trafalgar Square. Engine parts in playgrounds in Queens. Media shots of an exploding plane over the White House.
People wouldn't only be afraid of flying, they'd be afraid of planes flying anywhere within sight of them.
My much bigger concern is when they think to load a boat with explosives and quietly sail into any major harbor.
