Last week I attended a performance of Pirates of Penzance translated into Yiddish. This production grew out of the first staged reading I attended back in September '05, and was fully fleshed out. All dialogue, all songs, including an additional song apparently grabbed from Iolanthe for the dream sequence -- admittedly better than "Sighing Softly ( Read more... )

Is that Yiddish production still running? I would have liked to see it. I'm glad Yiddish theater still has some life in it.

I think it's only running through April 1, but I could be wrong. It's at the JCC.

I did a really bad job of spreading the word about this. I promise to do better next time!

...and when the Yiddish HMS Pinafore comes out, I'll let you know first thing!

I think I've told you the story about the time a few years ago when my grandmother and her sister tried to drag my uncle to see a play in Yiddish. My uncle, who doesn't speak Yiddish, said he'd rather stay at home and rest and read a book and was trying to be polite, but they just didn't get the hint. Finally my grandfather said from behind the newspaper, "Grace, how would you like to go to a play in Arabic?" (My uncle grew up in Egypt and speaks Arabic.) They got the hint.

Yes, you did tell me that story! It was a great little narrative -- and a comment on the old entry I linked to on this one. That was the first time I heard of Aunt Min, who I've decided I want to be when I grow up (if only for her excellent name).

Haha, once again I repeat my stories! I just looked at the old entry, and I told it much better the first time.

Aunt Min is also a cleaning fiend and is known for picking fruits and berries and the like wherever she finds them. There's a great story about olive trees in Davis, California...

I cannot describe how happy it has made me to know there exists in the universe a Yiddish production of Pirates of Penzance. Oysegeventlach!
