See Roosevelt Island

I feel a certain level of kindred spirit with Roosevelt Island. It reminds me of every home I've tried to make since leaving Jacksonville: it tries really hard to be classy -- every few yards along the sporadically-maintained bike trail that runs the perimeter of the island there'll be a classical sculpture or some weird modern art; at the ( Read more... )

One of my kids lives on Roosevelt Island.

i like it okay, i guess. It's a fun place to go hang out by the water, which i really don't get enough of. But it feels like work, because it's really such a schlep for me (downtown 1 to columbus circle and walk to the F, and that's the easy way, which would be fine except that then i have to schlep HOME again at eight pm and it's exhausting).

The other thing, of course is that it has high populations of both disabled kids (two special private schools) and old people with no legs (a VA hospital, or somesuch). On occasion, it can be rather creepy standing in line at the deli.

That was the other thing I wanted to mention but forgot till your comment -- I can't quite figure out the citizenry of Roosevelt Island. There seem to be some lower-income families, and and of course the residents of the nursing home, but then there'd be yuppie businessmen with tiny trendy dogs and people who seemed to be right smack in the socioeconomic middle. For such a small place, it's hard to get a grasp of where it stands. Perhaps it's just at a certain point in the gentrification ballet.

Well, from my time there, i can tell you that a large segment of the population has lived there since they opened it up to people, and own giant sprawling very very lived-in apartments (we're talking wallpaper, massive kitchen renovations, etc). Not necessarily wealthy, but solid middle-class and of boomer age.
