What no comments?

I wish i could help but i don't know a thing about wireless networking. I think it might be worth plugging in a cable ... might just get you connected to finish the updates.

I posted to my twitter to see if anyone can help you, but i see you have anonymous posting switched off. It may be worth allowing the anonymous just for this post in case anyone has an idea.

i hadn't remembered about the anonymous posting switched off bit - can i change it for an individual entry (just looked, and didn't see obvious way of doing that)?

Yah i am sure it is possible to change comment options for a single entry. Unless they have changed it in the last 2 years.

Ah, in fact somebody did reply to me on Twitter with a good suggestion.

When you boot up, do you get some options of which kernel to use? It probably gives you a few seconds to make your choice, and then goes into the top one.

If so, try down-arrow twice and go into the previous version. That might enable wireless to work again and finish updating.

This person also suggested connecting by wire should work.

thanks! =beam= (to you, and to them)

i hadn't noticed kernel options on booting - i will look out for them and if presented look for a previous version.

yup =nods= i think i need to acquire some network cable of suitable length - at least 10 metres!

hi =smile=

well, i got a cable... only to discover that there's no RJ45 port in the back of the box/in the network card! gah! =laughs=

(i put it to good use, tho, networking the windows pc and the laptop (inherited from kevin) and took of all i needed from the laptop in case i wanted to reinstall windows 98 on it...)

(i've subsequently installed xubuntu on the laptop... but not been able ot get it to boot since... or to figure out what's up!!!)

i have, however, got bunty to connect wirelessly again =grin= i persevered and tried what your person suggested a few times, in a few ways, and eventually found a version of itself in which it knew the possibility of detecting wireless networks =smile=

so, thanks again for that - especially as it didn't automatically give me kernel options, but being alerted to the possibility i watched very closely and pressed esc (i think it was) at the right time to get the kernel options =smile=

Oh well done! Sounds like quite a tricky business. It's annoying when these things happen, but quite rewarding when you eventually sort it out, don't you think?! :)

There do seem to have been a few new 'features' in the wireless operation of 8.10 Intrepid compared to 8.04 Hardy, if that is the update you have just done.

1) If you have an atheros wireless chip and encrypt using WPA then you have to change from the 'madwifi' option in the WPA supplicant driver to 'wext'. The release notes don't tell you this.

2) The old wireless used to allow you to use channels 1-13 (which is what we have in Europe). The new one only allows channels 1-11 by default (the US option) so if you have been using channels 12 or 13 you won't 'see' your WAP any more. Again this seems not to have been documented.

3) Apparently if you use the new Network Manager then you have to remove/comment out most of the lines from /etc/network/interfaces. I use wicd as my Network Manager so I didn't have to negotiate this particular problem myself.

hi =smile=

thanks for this!

i wasn't updating to intrepid, tho i have been considering it, so this is good to know.

i've got bunty back online again (details above) and think i'll just revel in that/this a bit before again considering updating to intrepid =smile=

i'm not sure i understand _all_ that you tell me about sorting out wireless issues in intrepid (tho i look forward to understanding it), and might be back with more questions later =grin=
