Not an expert but as I recall, tyre size is tyre size, so chains will fir the same size tyre. 'winter' tyres relate to construction and tread pattern (think off road tyres on a 4x4 used off road, rather than Chelsea Tractor). General are harder (so poorer ride and more noise for given speed) and not as good grip as normal 'summer' tyres. Tyre pressures relate to loading on the tyre, so will not usually change unless under extreme load. Let me know what areas you're thinking of, and I'll ask more specific questions of those that know.

thanks... i found this helpful, and then got a bit confused as to why you told me to disregard it! or was it just disregard a bit of it (like the whole grip thing) - some of what you wrote is also stuff i understood from my own looking around (like material and tread pattern). my tyre pressure is technically load dependent, tho i'm not sure exactly what load i'm carrying... i'm still looking out or a public weighbridge ;) i had a chat wiht my tutor (and a few fellows) at vehicle maintenance class tonight, and he thought the size wouldn't change in relation to snow chains, cos the circumference of the tyre should stay the same for speedometer and tacograph readings to continue to be accurate. wrt areas i'm thinking of - you mean countries? or areas of countries? or..?

Reading the forum, it looks like the grip will be as good as normal (or possibly better) on tarmac, so no worries there, but I think the noise/hardness issues stand. Lurch is good for 3 tons, and I doubt your camper mods get anywhere close to that, but yes, a weighbridge will confirm - check council depots near to you. (iirc, Walthamstow have one)
Countries - not sure if different countries will have different legal requirements as to what is carried or recommended. I imagine it will be expensive to take Lurch to Iceland though.

cool re local councils and weighbridges - ta =grin=

yeah, have read up/am reading up on the legal requirements (and not-legal-but recommendations) of different countries =nods=

yes, i think it will be expensive to take lurch to iceland.. and tbh, i don't think it's going to happen really. i think should it all fall into place (boat, time, money) i'll jump at it... and i wouldn't want not having snowchains to be the only limiting factor... but i do doubt it'll fall into place like that. i think north norway next year is far more likley.

Been pondering on this in odd moments, have you thought of looking (on ebay for example) for a set of suitable winter tires , that would cover the trip without the hassle /effort of chains?
