Good article about the Yale ladies.

These future moms betray a startling combination of naivete and privilege. To plot this kind of future, a woman has to have access to a pool of wealthy potential husbands, she has to stay married at a time when half of marriages end in divorce, and she has to ignore the history of the women's movement. It's not just at Ivy Leagues. Rollins (where I went to college) is a bastion for extremely wealthy, priviledged and spoiled girls who are literally just there to find an extremely wealthy, priviledged and spoiled husband who will be able to support her cocaine/Prada/Manolo Blahnik habit without her ever having to work. For some reason these girls seem to gravitate toward the Elementary Education degree....perhaps to prove how good they are with kids?

I have never seen so many people with such a tenuous grasp on reality. It's creepy.

It occurs to me that this may be contributing to the much-bemoaned declining birth rate among educated upper- or middle-class women. If you believe that staying at home even after your kids are in school is necessary to motherhood, well, you might find yourself passing up motherhood when the Perfect Rich Husband doesn't come along, OR you might find the whole idea of motherhood totally unappealing because it is set up as so demanding.

At the same time, the kind of careers Yale graduates get are generally ALSO very demanding, and I can sort of see why a woman would decide to give up the career or the family instead of fighting the status quo in two places at once. Sad, but...

YES.

That was a great piece and I'm going to get her book (about teen girls) from the library. Thank you for linking to it.
