Sorry love did want you to but wasn't sure I'd still be up when you got back last night and knew I would be out early and you'd be back late! Glad you approve though. X
Ta for that! 'Only' having been to Saturday I can't compare but if I look at how he played - beautifully, as you say - and what he played, the more melodic, less rock 'n roll ones were the ones that stood out for me. Sometimes it did feel that there was a band lacking, simply because some songs need more instruments to get a fuller rockier sound. Indeed, Libs-wise especially the back catalogue is rather large not to mention full of gems, so there's more there that would really suit Carl and his guitar. Speaking of which, I cannot stop watching his hands as he's playing France, it's incredibly fascinating. I'm glad I went, it was a very good night even though I simply could not sing Didz's lines in Come Closer. Perhaps that's still a bit too fresh. xx
As always, that was a thought provoking review. And I know exactly what you mean about the songs that sound better full band. TFH (with Graham Coxon) at the Bataclan was immense. Was also interesting to hear Peter's version of Grimaldi, having heard Carl play the same song on Friday. xxxx
I'm not even sure that it's about sounding better... Certainly some songs were planned for 'full band' and that's how we're used to hearing them. But I've heard acoustic versions of lots of the 'rockier' Libs songs - Carl recorded a number of sessions in 2004 which work really well, including TfH, WaW, CSMN etc., and Peter does them regularly - to good effect aside from the painful guitar bits. The thing that struck me was that Carl seemed to be playing the rock and roll as if he had a full band behind him. No concessions. And it was that that felt strange. Oddly, I got none of that feeling seeing him play in the states, although at those shows he really was alone. Very much so, one guitar and him. And there wasn't the echo of a band behind him, whilst last weekend, certainly on Sunday, and to some extent on Saturday too. x
