college 101

Sep 08, 2004 18:34

Today was Day One of college life for me, and it wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be. So, if you're just that bored enough, I'm going to give the update as I promised and walk through my day.
First up was English 125. As I predicted, no familiar face in that class. The professor is Dr. Kirsten Fogh, and she's a short, middle aged ( Read more... )

Do you know the Korean guy's name in your English class? Just curious- I think my roommate knows every Korean on campus, and I've been introduced to a few.
You'll never ever ever get away from the name game. Even if you go to grad school for ten years, you'll find yourself teaching some freshman class and making one up yourself. Take it from my Great Books GSI ;). Just when you think they've exhausted all possible random questions, someone finds another one. Didn't you do it about fifty times during Orientation too?

Actually, Orientation was much more of the whipping out the hand and pointing to where Grand Haven theoretically is. But, yeah, it was pretty much the same old introductory stuff. I swear, I could make a game out of this: 1) What's your name? 2) Where are you from? 3) Where are you rooming on campus? 4) Which college are you in? 5) Which classes are you taking? 6) What's your political orientation? 7) Who's your roommate? 8) Did you decide to room "blind?" etc, etc, etc.

As for the Korean dude's name, I think it's like Shong or something like that. He looks like the Chinese celebrity Eason Chan, but I doubt that helps you. I'll make sure to listen for it in my next class.

And, there's a guy in my wing of Mosher-Jordan who's Korean. His name is Eddie. Does your roomie happen to know him?

okay, so maybe I exaggerated a little. No, my roommate doesn't know Eddie, and apparently there's a very real and important difference between "Americanized" Koreans and "non-Americanized" Koreans (and Americanized doesn't mean Korean American), and the two groups don't associate much with each other. Sorry, I've just been informed of this. Probably I shouldn't have asked to begin with.

Remember, Denster: you don't need to get A's in college to be doing well.
I think I'm going to take a couple of my courses S/NC just because then I don't have to worry about the grade, and here nobody really cares if you take a class pass fail. My bio prof was encouraging it, and not because the class was super hard, either

It's good to hear from you, too, Elizabeth. How big are your classes? How's college life at Brown treating you? Email me soon and let me know how you're doing! You know my email address(es)! :) Talk to you later, and what the heck is S/NC stand for? Is that universal college talk or Brown lingo?

The Denny power walk...love it! Sounds like your classes are pretty easy, which is awesome. I'm practically overwhelmed at this point, and you'd think I'd have a handle on it by now. Insane amounts of reading. Material isn't that bad yet, but still, you guys (Shari, Nicole, etc.) seem to be having a pretty easy time of it. Curses...freshman more genius than myself. Did you get a chance to check out Festifall? Now that's diversity, at least in interests (and some of the groups reflect different heritages, cultures, etc.) Trust me, you will find that it takes all types...even here. But most of them are good types. Although, no matter what culture someone's from, they still might be a bad type. Sorry...know I'm being ambiguous, but my dorm seems to have more than its fair share of sorostitutes this year. Add that word to your freshman vocab...teaching you stuff already! Some of my Indian friends use fob as a way to categorize their friends, but they don't use it derogatorily (sp? it's past my bedtime). Goodness, I'm ( ... )

Zaijian is goodbye in Mandarin. And, I did check out Festifall. Overwhelming at first, but it was very cool. I signed up for so many organizations (and thus so many mailing lists) that I don't even remember them all. Is a sorostitute what I think it is? And you seem to be up past your bedtime often! Perhaps you should go to bed earlier. I don't know what FOB means...and the facebook.com rules!

i am so in love with college . . . i think the best way to enjoy it is to relax and not let schoolwork overwhelm you. do your homework as soon as it's assigned and then you've got the rest of the night to be calm.

also -- there is so much diversity at luther! right in the middle of the mid-west -- who knew? it's fantastic. such a change from our little white-bread town. everyone talks to everyone else. it's like a little utopia. *grins*
