NASA has released the most detailed pictures of the planet Earth to date.
The clear images, released by NASA, were pieced together from observations taken from a satellite of the land surface, oceans, sea ice and clouds.

Using a collection of these satellite-based observations, NASA scientists have stitched together months of observations of the ( Read more... )

Such as the parts of earth that aren't North America? Just so people don't think that NASA thought North America was the only thing worth photographing (and under this Administration no one could be blamed for thinking that even if NASA had taken other pictures, the Bushies wouldn't let NASA publish them), I would like to point out that there are also NASA pictures of the earth on which one can locate Singapore (as well as a number of other, less significant, countries in Asia).

Yup you're right, I had to go back and search for the pic of the rest of the world. It's now there, rightfully under the USA ;-)

Beautiful and yet knowing that we are destroying it every other minute

Yes, true. See the think blue atmosphere that is visible over the eearth? It looks so fragile! And that's what is supplying us our air and protecting us from radiation from the sun. This scientific report emphasises the importance of that think layer of atmosphere and ozone:

"Cosmic radiation consists of energetic charged particles, such as protons and Helium ions, moving through space. They originate from events beyond our solar system and from the sun. When these particles enter the Earth's atmosphere they collide with, and disrupt, atoms in our atmosphere, producing secondary, less intense, radiation. By the time cosmic radiation reaches the ground its intensity has been considerably reduced.

The Earth's atmosphere provides considerable protection from cosmic radiation. At commercial aircraft altitudes the protective layer of the Earth's atmosphere is much thinner than it is on the ground and the intensity of cosmic radiation is approximately 100 times greater at these altitudes than it is on the ground."
