But really now, aren't all picnics inherently gay? Anyway, this made the press here as well, with an additional quote from Au:
"It was never meant to be political, and this testifies to the paranoia of the government," Au said. "They automatically assume that anything gay is a political challenge to them. It speaks volumes about the political climate in Singapore."
And all film screenings cancelled as well? Again, how and why the government thinks that this is going to assist them in their quest to have Singapore viewed as a centre for culture and the arts is beyond me.
One would think that the cancellation of all of these events would be a good impetus for some more political activism, but I guess maybe it would take the raid and closing of a couple of bars or dance clubs for that to happen.
Political activism in Singapore has to be far less visible and vocal than in the U.S. as you're not allowed to march, gather in groups, hold talks etc. Do any of these and you're likely to end up even more silent and powerless languishing in pridon. All we can do is write to the political leaders and the media. This is what our enemies on the right do - they write and call, and it's actually very effective in a country where most people remain silent.
I'm hopeful that the recent spate of repressive crackdowns has actually spurred more gays here to action, and at least send an angry email to their Member of Parliament.
