It is definitely the opposite for me. If for no other reason, I basically always have 50-100BBs in front of me in a cash game, so it is much easier to figure out if you are up against KK-AA. On the other hand, in tourneys I may start with 100BBs or more, but before long I find myself in that 20-40BB range, particularly in the online tourneys where I have exponentially more hands played than live tourneys. With 40BBs in front of me, I don't I've ever gotten away from QQ preflop.

In the cash games I played back then the knowledge of NL holdem was low. The games were infrequent. What players who did play were very aggressive maniacs. And it was a cash game for (relatively) insignificant stakes. It was only money, easy to rebuy. Those guys were too tricky to be able to fold well with QQ, most times. I didn't do it and wasn't wrong much, either.
OTOH, the tournaments in which I played were all large, pretty much just the WSOP tournaments each year. In those tournaments, at that time, if someone was putting you to a decision when you have QQ you were either big dog or small favorite, always. Few risked their one WSOP main event chance for the year with less than QQ, back then.
Times have changed, the play of poker is just different now, perhaps.
