are there any excellent hole-in-the-wall type places that i should give a try?

preferrably around metro-detroit, i'm from the garden city/westland area but will travel.

In Wayne, there might still be Low Tide II (Low Tide I is in Louisiana). Seriously evil food.

Armando's in Mexicantown for steak fajitas. Also in Mexicantown--Xochimilco's ("Sochi's"), for the best chiles rellenos (stuffed peppers). Polonia in Hamtramck for good Polish food, and Lykon in Greektown for, well, Greek. :-)

Having gone to Polish Village, I have to agree with you--it's a lot more hole-in-the-wall, and also a lot better food than Polonia. :-)

For authentic tacos in Mexicantown, avoid all the bigger places and go to the little taqueria down the street from La Gloria Bakery.
