I feel like such a whiny baby after reading my last post.  That's probably because everything worked out in the end and we ended up making it to the cottage for the weekend.  Henry's car needed a new starter, and they were able to fix it by about 4pm on Friday ($700 later!!).  We made it to the cottage by 8pm that night.  Saturday was GORGEOUS.  We ( Read more... )

You're actually the person that I thought of when we started planning, because I know you've done it before. We just got the map of the 2000 km of canoe routes and we're kind of overwhelmed...... any places you can recommend??

the route that i did that took four days (but you could definately extend it) started at smoke lake (which is where the portage store is and is a good starting point because you can rent your canoes and then leave) and then we took a route up through eagle lake, raven lake and a bunch of lakes i can't remember but if you have the routes you can totally figure it out. anyway, we ended up at burnt island lake---which is AMAZING and you could definately spend more than one day there...then we took joe lake to canoe lake and looped back to the P store. Anyway, other nice places that i haven't been to, but my boyfriend has (he was a tripper in algonquin) is the Temagimi river, lake louisa, and opeongo lake. anyway, hope some of this helps---it IS overwhelming because there are so many places!!

Thanks so much, that does help! For some reason the idea of renting a canoe didn't even cross my mind, and we were planning on buying a brand new one. But renting actually seems a lot more realistic! We checked out the route you took, and it looks nice (and without any huge portages!)... Chris' only concern is that it might be a little too crowded with campsites. Was that your experience? I mean, I'm sure it LOOKS crowded because they have to scale down the map, but did you find that you saw a ton of people when you went?

it wasn't too crowded for us but we went the last week in august....we didn't see any people until we got to burnt island (that is pretty popular, but most people go the opposite way up (ie, through canoe lake and up instead of going the less populated way). the portages were well maintained around that area as well--which is a bonus!
