Scarecrow & Mrs. King Part 2

A little more setup for this story...

Eighteen days later, Amanda and Francine cracked their first case. Billy had been pleased and gave them the afternoon off. They headed up to the Q Bureau for their purses.

Francine eyed her new partner. “That was a great catch this morning. I honestly never thought to look inside the VCR.”

Amanda smiled. “It’s really thanks to Jamie. He was sneaking a cookie one day a few years back and I was on my way into the den. He hid it in the first place he could think of.”

Both women laughed. “Well, thank goodness for naughty boys then,” Francine said. “That disk was the key to the whole plot.”

Amanda searched for her keys. “I’ll see you Monday, Francine.”

The other agent stopped her. “We should celebrate.”

Amanda tried not to stare. Maybe Francine had a fever. “You mean like dinner and drinks?”

“No. I mean something special.” Francine smiled. “Look, I won’t admit this to anyone else, especially Billy, but we work well together. I think you should stay here in the Q Bureau.”

Amanda refrained from laughing. “We do. I’ll stay.”

They stood staring at each other a little awkwardly. Francine broke the silence. “How about a spa day? Facials, manicures, massages, the works.”

“I say that beats dinner and drinks anytime.” Amanda glanced at the phone. “We’d better go now. I know from experience that as soon as we make plans that phone starts ringing.”

Francine grabbed her elbow. “How fast can you run in those heels?”

~smk~

Having one person give you a facial while two others worked on your manicure and pedicure had been heavenly. Judging by the sighs coming from the other table, Francine was enjoying the massage as well. Amanda was not.

It felt nice enough. The truth was all she could think about was Lee’s massages and those memories led to other, more intimate ones. Amanda missed her husband and all she wanted was to be in his arms. She would gladly keep their marriage a secret if only he would come home to her.

“We need chocolate.”

Amanda turned her head slightly to Francine. “What?”

Francine grinned. “The only thing this day is missing is chocolate. In the café downstairs they serve a simply divine chocolate mousse.”

Amanda returned the grin. “We are celebrating after all.”

That afternoon set a pattern for the new partners. They would hit the spa after every case they solved. With each visit, Amanda’s thoughts lingered less and less on Lee. She liked working with Francine despite the frequent disagreements. Amanda never stopped loving Lee but she began to see his leaving as inevitable. He wasn’t the suburban type and he never would be. She had been a fool to think otherwise.
