Some more metawriting, life updates, etc.

I am never around. Why is that? It seems like I'm always online. Gah.

Comics/Comic Movies/Things Out of ComicCon

- Thor: I am officially excited.
- Avengers: I like Joss Whedon, but I don't particularly see him as being good with large-scale action films. He's more of a Mystery Men/ Super/Kick-Ass scale. Also, lack of Edward Norton reduces me to Hulk-like levels of rage.
- Green Lantern: I cried when Ryan Reynolds recited the oath. But then, I would.
- Batman: Under the Red Hood was possibly the best animated Batman film I've seen. None of the Animated Universe voice actors make an appearance, but NPH is Nightwing and Jensen Ackles makes a damn fine Red Hood (he sounds quite a bit like Johnny Yong Bosh, imagine my surprise). But really, really good adaptation of a comic arc. In fact, it's probably better than the comic arc because if I recall correctly, the arc went on forever and lost a lot of its emotional impact. Also, there was an awesome jibe at the end involving Barbara/Oracle. Also, I cried, but I cry about everything.
- LEGEND OF KORRA: Hells. Yes.

Movies

- Saw Inception: liked the movie, LOVED this analysis of the plot (costume based), but really just did not connect with Leo's character. Had an interesting argument with Jake on the way back where he claimed I wasn't being empathetic enough and I claimed Leo needed to man the fuck up. This is completely backwards from our normal arguments. All in all, I should stop seeing Nolan movies because I get way too upset when denied my movie-going catharsis.
- Saw Despicable Me and want fanfic/a sequel. I usually stay away from fic for children's movies because I dislike spoiling the pure, childlike glee I come to associate with the film.
- Oh, right. PoP movie. I actually saw it on opening day and there were two Elikas in the theater. That alone was worth it. I'm...convinced there's a good movie in there somewhere, just not really in its current incarnation. I'm also relatively confused how they could take a relatively straightforward video game story (one of the easiest to adapt, in my opinion) and totally screw it up. Oh well. Costumes are good, Jake Gyllenhall is pretty. It's probably too much to ask for them to have a good story as well. Oh, and the movie included ostrich racing. That was pretty nifty.
- There Will Be Blood - amazing. Absolutely amazing.

TV/Anime

- Sherlock is amazing. If you haven't watched it, go do so RIGHT NOW. Modern day Sherlock Holmes with Holmes played by Benedict Cumberbatch. If that name doesn't make you want to see what's up, then you have no sense of awesome.
- Finally watched Gurren Lagaan. I just...never made it through the first couple of episodes. But this time I watched it with Jake, who promptly got addicted to it, so I suffered through. Good show though, I wish I could still get involved in anime like I used to. Jake got angry with me when I pointed out Rossiu is Vash (Johnny Yong Bosh in the dub) because then he couldn't watch the show normally any more. I have to say, the first time Adult!Simon put on his posture collar I was like "Guh. Simon got hot." But seriously when did that happen?
- New Futurama: Other than the writers forgetting Fry and Leela are now together-ish when it is convenient from them, the new series is okay. There's been a couple of pretty good episodes (Proposition Infinity, Attack of the Killer App, and Lethal Inspection) but the others are just misses. The first episode felt like the writers were trying to see how much they could get away with before leveling out to actually writing good, tightly-plotted comedy again.

Plays

- Saw Promises, Promises with Sean ___ and Kristen Chenoweth. Oh. My. God. Does Ms Chenoweth have an amazing voice. Other than that, forgettable play and music with good, clean production design, but overall lacking heart. I kept getting distracted by the (really awesome) ensemble costumes to pay much attention to what was actually going on in the show.
- Saw La Cage aux Folles on a night without Kelsey Grammar. Still absolutely amazing, hilarious, wonderful, and full of people loving what they do. Plus my favorite comedies all involve cross dressing. I wish they hadn't done the ___ number at the Tony's, as viewing at a second time made the climax lackluster.

Books

On an ebook binge.

- Finished up The Tide Lord Quartet by Jennifer Fallon. I like Jennifer Fallon, I really do. She writes the kind of worlds I like to play around in and archetypal characters. I can't decide if I like the end of the series or not. I've certainly been thinking about it a lot, but partially because I can't actually tell if the ending makes sense. I think I've come to the conclusion that Ms Fallon wanted her three main characters to be happy, even if that meant completely destroying the world that she had created. Even with romantic fulfillment, I can't see anyone being particularly happy after the destruction of their home. I would love some fanfic for it but Ms Fallon is one of those silly, bestselling authors who seems to despise who love her series' enough to write fic for them, and the books themselves are relatively unknown.
- Started some Karen Miller, but got much too distracted to finish it. Reading on my laptop is not my favorite thing - I've been seriously considering getting an ereader, but I think I've decided to hold out for the next gen of iPads instead. Oh well.
- Working on the Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop now, not far enough in to make a judgement. So far woman-dominated society is somewhat of a turnoff, but I was promised romance so I will stick with it.
- One of these weeks I was feeling sorry for myself and dl'd some books recommended on twitter. Turns out, they were Harlequin romance and I couldn't bring myself to finish them.

Video Games

- Very upset with the Dragon Age 2 news. I don't want to play as fantasy Shepard, I want to play as my f!Cousland or some other character I've created. Give me back my wish fulfillment.
- I got into the FFXIV beta, which made me lol. I made a character and loved the tutorial level, but the frequent crashing and extremely clumsy controls means I haven't touched it since then.

Fan Stuff

- Oh, Team Starkid. I love you so, so much. But why, please why, is Joe Walker in a dress? I spent the entire first act wondering if Umbridge was secretly Voldemort. But seriously: AVPS == TEARS OF JOY.
- Making fun of cosplayers always gets on my nerves. ComicCon is a lot of biting my nails and a lot of looking at pictures of the same scantily clad girls over and over again, because that's the only thing most internet sites will take pictures of, apparently.
- Still debating wether or not I'm going to PAX. Still debating cosplays for hypothetical PAX. Still debating wether my (HAND BEADED) Elika costume will ever look good on me.

Updated sketchblog with some of my less fail WIPs. Of course, I never finish anything.

I'm trying to get serious with writing because I only have a few weeks of summer left and writing is one of those things that brings me immense pleasure if I can ever convince myself to do it. Trying to figure out if I want am ready for beta readers, but having only ever been a fringe member of fic communities I am not sure how to go about it. Internet, how does it fukkin work?! Plus, current iteration is at 32,000 right now, with a couple of large holes in the middle. I think I have to clean up my act before I start pimping myself on coms and forums. (Plus apparently I write like Stephenie Meyers so I need to fix that ASAP)

I found out an ex-boyfriend of mine "cut [me] out, finally". It shouldn't hurt, but he was also my best friend for an unreasonably long period of time and probably the first person I've ever shown my writing too. :: laughs :: Now I feel like a cad for thinking we were friends. I should just learn that my writing means more to me than it will ever mean to another living person and stop taking things so personally. Of course, I've never even gotten more than the vaguest of responses on my stories, so that probably indicates I'm in a terrible place creatively overall. Ignore me, I'm rambling.

There is some more, but I should probably just post this instead of leaving it sitting around on my computer all day. Also, I am wayy too excited for the LJ app.
