Arg, I took wee pictures of my Sims but I can't find them. Boo. There was one of a Sim eating on the toilet, which was clearly the best picture ever. I've looked where Google says they will be and they're not there. I must be doing something wrong out of stupid. Oh well, I will try again I suppose.

Did you look in My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Screenshots if you took them with the game camera?

What did you take the pictures with, BTW? If you used something like Gadwin and didn't play windowed but full screen they will all be black and unusable anyway.

Using the in-game camera is really the best way of getting screen caps in Sims 3 unless you want to capture the pop-ups, in which case you should use FRAPS because then you don't have to play windowed.

I used the wee pink/red button to take snapshots, is that not right?

that takes pictures for their memories, not for you to look at outside the game. Just press C and look for it where I said - my documents\Electronic arts\the sims 3\snapshots
