"I'm sorry to see you so upset, miss Rose."
"Oh, really?", Rose said, hugging her arms around herself, scrunched into a little ball-o-Rose on a chair, "You've managed to pull up an emotion like that, huh?"
"I am capable of emotion, and it is obvious your children are time-tots, so what you're saying can be true, to some extent. Besides, your distress is obvious," he handed her a cup of tea.
She frowned sadly, taking it from him. "Then why can't you remember?"
"I don't believe there is anything for me TO remember."
Rose shook her head. "You have to be him", she said, "There aren't any other.....you're the last"
"Last?"
"Last of your kind", she said, then sighed, "Well, of the pure-blood timelords, anyway"
"Ah... You know about that, then?" he asked, seeming strange that he stood so still and kept his attention in one place so long.
"Obviously, having been your companion and had a VERY close relationship to you", said Rose icily.
He at least had the grace to look quite embarrassed and sat down.
Rose looked at him and sighed. "I'm sorry it's just...", she looked down, "I lost you fo so long, and then I got you back....and then I lost you again"
"Maybe... this other supposed Doctor... isn't gone, gone. Just... gone gone."
She gave him a LOOK. "There's that incoherent babbling again"
"No, It's not incoherency, it's just... mid-coherency. He may not be gone for good, you know, whomever he is."
"How can you be sure he isn't you?", she asked, "And you;ve just been made not to remember?"
"I can't. But if I were to be a father again, I'd like to think that would be something I would remember."
"...I guess", she frowned softly, "But how can there be two of you? Unless it's like the Mickey thing"
"Mickey thing?" he asked.
"Mickey, my best friend", said Rose, "In THIS world, there was another of him, but he was called Ricky"
"Ah, well if there was another of me, wouldn't he be, oh I don't know, some sort of teacher phrase, I suppose."
"I don't know", said Rose quietly, "I don't understand any of this, that's what HE did"
"If you don't mind my asking, what DID you do, then?"
"I was his companion", she said simply.
"Ah. Well, companions come and go, mostly go," he said.
"I didn't", she said, "Well...not by CHOICE"
"Oh? Well, sometimes companions don't get a choice, it's what's best for you."
"Best for me?", her eyes flashed angrily.
"Yes, best for you," he replied calmly.
"It was NOT best for me", she snapped, "It was the worst time of my life"
"You would have gotten over it and gone ON with your life. This is no life for a human."
"I want it", said Rose, "I want my life to be with him more than anything, it's the only life I want"
He peered at her as though she were a sort of creature he'd never met before. "Why?"
"Because I love the adventure", she said, "And seeing the many worlds and above everything else, because I love him"
"How can you love someone like a timelord?"
"Easily", she smiled softly.
"Baffling."
"Why?", she asked with a frown, "Okay, so he's a complete and utter NUTTER, but I still love him"
"Humans are so strange, You're so unpredictable sometimes, and at others so completely predictable."
"You're saying I'm predictable?", asked Rose, a smirk crossing her lips, "That sort of idea has been the downfall of many"
"I'm sure there are things about you which are predictable, Rose Tyler."
"Not many", she said with a grin.
"I don't know you well enough yet to say."
"Hm", said Rose, then sighed, resting her chin on her drawn-up knees.
He reached forward and awkwardly pat her knee.
Rose's eyes flicked over to him as she breathed out air. "Sorry, I just miss him"
"I know," he said, taking his hand back. "It's permeating the place," he said with a small chuckle.
"Can't help it", said Rose, "I don't like being away from him, I'm going to have to handcuff him to me next time"
"I'm not sure he'd appreciate that."
"He wouldn't have a say in the matter", she smiled.
"You are a feisty one, I'll give you that."
"Thank you", she beamed.
He chuckled. "Listen, I'll stick around, come back when I can, make sure you're alright. Timetots are different than human children - and they'll need a Time Lord to help keep an eye on their raising. Don't hit me!" he said, jokingly putting up a hand, "I'm sure you'll do fine, but they'll need someone who can explain why they feel the tilting of the universe, and things like that. Until your Timelord, wherever he is, comes back. Okay?"
Rose lowered her hitting hand and sighed. "Fine", she said quietly, "But only until my Doctor comes back"
"Of course."
"So long as we're clear on that", nodded Rose.
"Like the waters of Tibrin."
"Good man", she smiled.
"I try to be. As it is, I've got something I need to do, so you should probably head home. I'll be back soon to check on you."
"Okay", Rose said, then, as an afterthought, "Be safe"
He smiled and nodded. "I will."
Rose gave him a smile, settling back in her chair again.
