Personality : Sylar is a very unpredictable sort. He’s got a case of what seems like bipolar disorder at times, even - he can become violet and upset at the drop of a pin, so he can be considered very volatile and violent. But then, at times, he can seem almost eerily calm, especially when he’s about to murder someone. There’s a lot of reasons that he behaves the way he does, but it is primarily because he finds himself to be such a great evolution - the most special thing to exist.

In other words "insane", which may be the best word to describe him. And a sociopath - he’s void of guilt, his personality is powerful and dominating, he does not like for others to have control over a situation, and will do what he can to change that and at the quickest speed possible. He has a tendency to be fake around people to get them to give him what he wants (pretending to be another person in the hopes that Mohinder would give him a list of people with special abilities. Or, while void of power, his behavior towards Maya, even after killing her brother).

He also can come off as a bit of a creepy stalker type. If he finds you interesting, he will follow you. If he finds you have a power, he will corner you and possibly take your brain. His drive is to stand out - and he certainly has.

The other side of him is Gabriel, the watch maker, who is how he was with his mother, even after "becoming" Sylar. This was the side of him that had guilt, that didn’t want to murder people without powers, and that part was still holding on until he met up with his mother again, who told him that he was essentially, not as special as he could possibly be. After killing her, that Gabriel side went away completely. Although he can slip into a fake-mode that is similar if he wants to win people over to be his toys.

History : “And I wanted to be different. Special. I wanted to change. A new name, a new life. The watchmaker's son ... became a watchmaker. It is so futile, that I wanted to be ... important.” I think this best describes his earlier years, in the words of Sylar himself. Sylar was born Gabriel Gray to Virginia Gray, and a watchmaker who is unnamed as of yet. His family life and earlier years was "boring" so to speak. His family could have been considered religious (as when the first time Mohinder and Eden enter his apartment, they see a cross plastered on the wall and many times the words "Sinner" and "Forgive me Father" appear on the walls), but if they weren’t, Gabriel certainly is. His mother collected snowglobes, and Sylar often traveled and bought them for her, she voices that she was envious of his ability to. From this, it seems Gabriel Gray and his mother were very close. He spent his time in the Gray and Sons shop, restoring Watches and making them.

Until he was approached by Chandra Suresh. Chandra proposed to Gabriel that he could, perhaps, be someone unique, but he was unable to identify any skills. (Although at this time, Gabriel presented Intuitive aptitude - in other words, an innate skill to see how things work. He could tell when something was two seconds to slow in a watch. DX) When tested to see if he had any skills, nothing showed up. He didn’t present to have anything special for himself. But now that the idea had been planted in his head - he wanted it. Envied it, and hunted for it. He contacted someone among Chandra’s local people with special abilities named Brian Davis - a telekinetic. This is the first time that he has called himself “Sylar”. When Brian Davis showed him his Skill, Sylar said it was impressive, and then looked at the man - told him that something was broken and he had to fix it.

And the next time he sees Chandra, he shows him of his newly discovered skill - telekinesis. It seems that Sylar has the ability to take other people’s abilities, although at this point, it is unknown how. Chandra seems to have found out, and told Sylar to stop contacting him - and Sylar blames him for creating him. Eventually, he goes out and kills Chandra.

Sylar, at this point, only went after those with powers. Prior to the series he seems to have obtained something that allows him to freeze others (and a few other unknown skills that are shown). The first time the work he does is really seen, was when he was attempting to get Molly Walker’s power (obtaining her father’s in the process, but we’re not positive of what that is - there is a few powers that aren’t known that he has as of yet, but if they are ones he obtained prior to arriving here, he will have them, perhaps just not put them to use). He killed her father in front of her eyes. His calling card would be cutting open the skull and removing the brain.

But the thing about Sylar was, he only repeatedly went after those who had powers. People he judged as ‘undeserving’ of them. He went on and killed very, very man people, and absorbed a lot of people’s powers in a few month’s time. The cops had trouble trying to find him, and they never actually did. He tries to get Molly’s power as a tracking device, and fails.

He tries again, gets shot at by Matt, and you hear that Molly refers to him as the “boogeyman”.

One person is obtained between then and his attempt to kill Claire - Charlie Andrews. Who’s power is enhanced memory. In the comic he says something to the effect of “Ever since I met that girl, I just seem to be…remembering everything.”

After this, he attempts to take Claire’s power, and fails, killing the wrong cheer leader, and getting thrown off a building by Peter. He is tricked and is taken to the company. He disappears for some time after this, at the company being experimented on and revived (read: tortured), essentially, until he escapes by killing a doctor, and he goes to Claire’s home and attempts to get her there. He is chased away from there shortly after this. But…that doesn’t really slow him down.

So he ends up contacting Mohinder Suresh, who has taken up his father’s research, and has a list of people with the special abilities. But not after he takes the brain of Zane Taylor, in order to get the power of melting things 8D) . He follows him and while they’re together, he takes the powers of a woman who has superior hearing. He takes her brain as well, and then Suresh discovers that it is in fact “Sylar” who had killed his father.

He drugs Sylar and ties him in a chair (drugging him so he can’t use his telekinesis). During this, though, Sylar manages to stop the flow of the drug (with telekinesis, and without Mohinder noticing) and Peter shows up, the two briefly battle (resulting in Peter “dying” because of him), and then Sylar runs off again. While he’s off and about, again, he ends up killing Issac Mendez, taking his brain, and obtaining the ability to paint the future.

While painting a picture -- here he learns of the exploding man and the people that would die. He knows, then, that he doesn’t want to kill innocent people. He calls Suresh, again, and asks for help, getting rejected. He says that he must stop the explosion, and goes off to see his mother.

While with his mother, the two are talking, and his mother is saying how he can do so much more with his life. How he could be anything - and he asks her if it is alright ‘to just be a watch maker’. And she says that he’s not special enough. So he shows her his power of freezing things, and creates a small snow storm in the house. She screams at him, calling him the devil, evil, and possessed. And he says how he doesn’t want to hurt innocent people. (He cries at one point saying he doesn’t want to kill all those people).

When they finally see each other again, she attempts to kill him with a pair of scissors, and he stabs her with them. He paints the explosion on the floor in her blood. And decides that he would become even more special (even like being the president). He tracks down everyone, and finds Ted, now resolved at becoming the exploding man. He takes Ted’s power (radioactivity, also, Sylar has great control -- Ted did not, and his power would be effected by his emotions).

For the last time he attempts to get Molly, and you hear her say that the boogeyman will eat your brain. (This is the first reference to him doing that!)

He and Peter fight, and Hiro Nakamura comes in and stabs Sylar in the chest. And Sylar crawls away in the sewer. He is saved by Candice, who is reviving him with illusions, and he kills her, and eats her brain. And he learns that his powers are gone, as he can not use his newly obtained skill (it is unknown if he actually has the power or not, and until canon proof appears that it worked, he won’t be using it).

While on the run, he meets a girl named Maya, and he learns of her power. He sets his goal to charm her and then take her power when he gets his own back. The two travel together with her brother, and at one stop, he kills her brother, after having convinced her that she can control the power on her own.

The two eventually get to Matt’s place, and they call Suresh again. They ask him to come and fix (with or else circumstances). He shoots Maya in the chest, and sees how Claire’s blood works, and he finds out he has the Shanti Virus. And he runs off when Elle comes in, and injects himself with the remainder of her blood, getting his powers back.
