I really hope that when I retire, I'm living in a pedestrian community. I've always dreamed of this but I just can't see how to make it happen. I could move to such a community, but they sure wouldn't speak my language!

Agreed. Sometimes I'll realise someone hasn't posted in a while, and I'll go and see what's happened; some just never appear again, and one has no idea why. :(

As you say, even in person, we don't know how to lean on friends for help.
