Character Name: Decus

Character Series: Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatosk/Dawn of the New World

Age: 24

Background: Having lost his parents early on in life, Decus grew up at the orphanage of a town called Hima. Few fond memories stemmed from that institute, given the corruption of its owners. For example, the director and his sons murdered and robbed a member of a band of travelers, Decus, sixteen at the time, took the blame. While guiltless, when he pitted his words against those of the real culprits, he lost. When the surviving party members lynched him, nobody made the effort to save him. However, just as they were about to kill Decus, droves of monsters attacked Hima, killing the director, his sons, and the travelers. They also razed the orphanage to the ground. Decus discovered that this attack had been provoked by none other than another member of the orphanage, a young half-elf girl named Alice. After that day, Decus pledged the rest of his life in return for her rescuing him.
Wherever Alice went, a lovesick Decus was likely to follow. When Alice joined a Sylvaranti liberation group called the Vanguard, Decus followed. When she asked him to commit atrocity upon atrocity, he obeyed without question.
Eventually, the Vanguard, which had strayed from liberating the land of Sylvarant from its oppression by Tethe’alla and had veered toward the reestablishment of the Sylvaranti Dynasty, began to take drastic actions in order to defame the Church of Martel and the Tethe’allans supporting it, the Vanguard’s leader gave Decus a powerful item called a Centurion’s Core in order to change his shape into that of Lloyd Irving, a hero who had recently reunited the two lands. Venturing to Palmacosta, a town in which the Vanguard had begun to meet, he massacred the innocent and burned the city, a deed eventually known as the Blood Purge. He claimed to have struck the city in the name of the Church of Martel, further souring Sylvaranti relations with the Tethe’allans.
He continued to use this guise from time to time, later striking Flanoir, where he later met Emil, who he mistook for another enamoured fan. There, in an act of gratitude, he shared his redolent cologne, Eau de Seduction with his alleged fanboy. He paraded around under his identity and Lloyd’s alike, confusing Emil, Marta, and even Lloyd’s friends as the two parties hurried to find more Centurions’ Cores. However, Decus’ façade was finally foiled when he kidnapped the girl of a prominent noble family. While his trademark cologne prevented Emil and the victim’s older brother, Zelos Wilder, from intercepting him, it also identified him to his pursuers. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to him, the real Lloyd Irving had joined the chase for Seles (Zelos’ sister) and the Centurions’ Cores.
After Decus returned to the Vanguard’s Cape Fortress, he had a brush with the real Lloyd, resulting in a duel that lasted until Emil, Marta, and Lloyd’s friends discovered them. Given the fighters’ close proximity, nobody could determine which of the two was saturated in Eau de Seduction. Eventually, Decus made the grave mistake of opening his mouth, blabbering in a manner uncharacteristic of Lloyd, which allowed Emil to send him crashing into a wall, thus shocking him enough to eliminate the illusion. Just as Emil’s team started to question him, Alice showed up with Seles at her mercy. Just as she had convinced Marta to return their Centurions’ Cores and weapons in exchange for Seles’ safety, Colette Brunel, Regal Bryant, and Sheena Fujibayashi, three of Lloyd’s former party members, ambushed Alice and Decus and took off with Seles. As Emil, Marta, and Zelos hurried after the others (as well as Alice, who was attempting to retrieve her hostage), Decus stepped in the way, forcing the group to defeat him before they could move on. However, following his defeat, Decus was able to escape thanks to another member of the Vanguard, Richter Abend.
While the discovery of Decus’ disguise eliminated any need for him to keep it on his person, he had been exposed long enough that it had begun to change him. For example, when a priest in Meltokio spoke ill of Alice, Decus, upset by the insult, reacted more violently than usual, kicking the defenseless priest incessantly, not even stopping when Alice told him that he had done enough. Only her shouting at him was able to bring him out of his trance. He still seemed to have some control, however, as he still ventured to the Temple of Lightning in search of Centurion Tonitrus’ core. He slaughtered the guards and threatened to do the same to a researcher in the temple, something that wasn’t necessarily prompted by Solum’s Core. When speaking with the researcher Rilena, he upheld his usual delusions about his attractiveness, but when Emil threatened to get in his way, he attacked the boy, overwhelming him with unrelenting strikes of the sword. Emil eventually fought back by opening a portal that consumed both Decus and Rilena and deposited them in another temple.
The madness became worse overtime, until during the Vanguard’s invasion of the resort town Palmacosta, Decus had to be locked up in a steel room as he lost all rational thought. All he knew was that he wanted the Centurion Solum’s core, and he would fight anyone in his way (or really anyone in sight) in order to retrieve it. Alice used his condition as a trap to separate Emil and Marta, leading them to his room of imprisonment and capturing Marta with a trap door. As Alice left, she locked the door, leaving Emil to deal with the insane Decus, who wasted little time freeing himself from his bindings and pummeling Emil. However, during his scuffle, he knocked over the Eau de Seduction that he had given to Emil, and the powerful scent managed to wake his consciousness long enough for him to stop in a baffled state. Before he could question why his alleged fanboy was wandering around Vanguard territory, Zelos and Colette came to Emil’s rescue and dragged him out of the room, closing the door in Decus’ face before he could run out to follow them.
Despite the thick walls of metal and the locked door, the Vanguard’s soldier, once again overtaken by the core’s insanity, managed to force his way out of the room and track down his commander, Marta’s father, who happened to have taken back the core. His attraction to the centurion’s core caused him to ignore the fact that the commander was his superior and drove him to literally tear through the man in order to retrieve Solum’s Core. Emil knocked him over and held him at bay as Marta awakened the core, at which point Decus’ senses returned to him, but not the memory of his bout of madness. Alice retrieved him, and the two fled.
After Marta saved her father’s life, he disbanded the Vanguard. However, Richter, who had apparently suggested several of the radical ideas to him, continued to hunt for the Centurions’ Cores, and even more so, the core of their leader, Ratatosk. Alice and Decus remained by his side, forcing them to confront Emil and Marta one last time at the Ginnungagap. Beforehand, Decus returned home to Hima, visiting the site where the orphanage had once stood. There, he retrieved the bone of a demon, which had attracted several monsters to the area, and threw it away, still wanting to preserve his hometown. With slight regret about fighting someone like Emil but even stronger conviction to fulfill Alice’s wishes, he left knowing that either one of them was going to kill the other very soon.
Shortly thereafter, he and Alice joined Richter at the Ginnungagap and battled Emil and Marta’s party. The two put up a fight but in the end failed to dispose of Richter’s enemies. Somewhere between his losing consciousness in the battle and his staggering to his feet in order to try in vain to protect Alice from death by Emil’s blade, he found himself on an island with no memories safe for that of his name.
Personality: Decus is a rather simple fellow. He has a mind of his own, but he often spares himself the effort of using it extensively. More often than not, he will follow Alice’s orders without question. Also, unlike others who had become possessed by the Centurions’ Cores, an affected Decus does not maintain some level of twisted thought, instead regressing into a berserker with only one strong instinct compelling him to act. He is capable of thinking on his own, but in doing so, he often jumps to ridiculous conclusions, such as his conclusion that Emil has a crush on him. He is also known to be extremely gullible: For example, when he purchases various items out of catalogues, such as the Eau de Seduction and an exercise machine, he believes the bogus guarantees and is genuinely shocked when they don’t seem to work as intended. Basically, while he is capable of making his own decisions, he is easily led by others and finds little reason to question whether or not they are truthful to him.
Simple or not, Decus still has enough education (or at least a knack for drama) to use some ostentatious language, especially when Alice is either present or the subject of discussion. He also tends to boast obnoxious body language marked by pointing, slow, fluid movements, and excessive pelvic movement. Ever since Alice saved his life, he has devoted the rest of his life to her, and while he obeys her orders unconditionally, he does hope to someday win her affections, which he at least seems to believe are just well hidden. He fantasizes about being her knight in shining armour and would do just about anything to make her love him back, but for now, he will be an overly dramatic and love stricken buffoon.
Decus seems to have an overly inflated ego, claiming that several people he meets, both male and female, cannot resist him, despite his swearing his heart to Alice. He credits much of this to his Eau de Seduction, as the catalogue claims that its aroma appeals to both genders. However, he is confident in himself as a whole, believing that Alice, who must secretly return his affections, calls him “Dumbo” because she thinks that he is “dashing, undaunted, majestic, brilliant, and oh-so-sexy.” He is convinced that he is a heartthrob, but a part of him seems to be vaguely aware that Alice may be pushing him away because she is truly repulsed by him. In Flanoir, he prays for her to fall desperately in love with him and in his final words to her, in he confesses that he loves her, even if she doesn’t feel the same way, both of which indicate that he may not be as convinced about her affections for him as he claims.
Despite his lack of strong morals, as demonstrated by his responsibility (and lacking remorse) for the Blood Purge of Palmacosta, he does not always meet the stereotype of the cruel villain. He will follow orders, but he doesn’t particularly hate people or wish them harm. Even though they are his enemies, he tends to be somewhat civil (when he was in his right mind) toward Emil and Marta, only attacking when they threaten Alice’s safety or goals. During one last encounter before their battle in the Ginnungagap, Decus even admits that he would rather not fight Emil if at all possible. While any attachments he has to others aren’t nearly as strong as his devotion to Alice, he doesn’t seem to hold grudges or harbor an extreme hatred for most people, not even toward Hima, where he suffered horrible injustices during his childhood.
While he is dramatic, Decus tends to be even tempered as long as Alice is not involved. When he is with her, he becomes a doting and submissive fanboy, doing anything to please her. He concerns himself greatly over her. However, he isn’t one to let many things get under his skin. He could be insulted by anyone-even Alice-and still manage to hold his head high and maybe even take the comment as praise. While he may not have everything he wants in life, he’s fairly content.
