I'm allergic to dogs. Every time I go to my in-laws' house I feel like I'm going to DIE sneezing and coughing. They've always dismissed it as dust, me having a cold, seasonal allergies, whatever ( Read more... )

You're allergic to pet dander. :( I've got that too. If you can find some generic brand loratadine tablets, they're non-drowsy and 10 mg should last for 24 hours. They might help to relieve the symptoms while you get rid of all the dander in the meantime. But it sounds like you've got a bad case of it, so yes, please avoid dogs at all costs after this. :( Severe allergies are very unfun.

Not much dander in dog slobber, though. I used to be as allergic to dogs as this (aggravated by my asthma, too), but it scaled back considerably to a mild or moderate allergy as I grew up, only to be joined by a developing cat allergy.

I have heard that people can inoculate themselves to at least specific animals by taking allergy medication for a while before living with the animal in question, then tapering off the medication, so the immune system, I suppose, learns that the animal in question isn't a threat. You can also get weekly shots, but I can't imagine going through the hassle.

From what my allergist told me back when I had those 30 needles put in my back, pet dander is caused by their saliva. They lick their fur and the saliva dries, flakes off, and becomes "dander". This is why whenever my cat licks my chin or something, I start itching and tiny red bumps would form where she licked me. It's annoying.
