Have you read Scott Adams' "The Dilbert Future"? He presents a similar idea whereby all the matter in the universe is constantly expanding, meaning "gravity" is just the space between two objects getting filled in.
He also touches on it in God's Debris, which is worth a read in any case.
I haven't read either of those books (looks like "God's Debris" is a free pdf, so maybe I'll check it out), but I looked up stuff on that Expansion Theory. It doesn't seem to work in my head though when I try to imagine it. I don't see how orbits could be possible.
It's an interesting idea, but it raises the question of why the pressure from a bunch of matter grouped together would only push other matter towards it, rather than away from it. If you think of matter increasing the pressure of the "mold" around it, then wouldn't the mold be just as likely to push things away as it would be to push it inwards?
I think of the tension only being focused in towards the holes because the mold is constantly trying to push in on areas that are open. When the holes slip through the mold, the mold is constantly pushing in to fill in the space that was left. So that leads me to think it could be possible for only inward pushing.
Not that I'm saying you're wrong here (who knows, man? you could be dead on the money), but the analogy doesn't really hold up here with how I generally think of pressure in matter. Pressure pushes equally in all directions; one-way pressure doesn't really make sense.
By the way, here are two things that I think you would enjoy doing greatly:
1. Playing this game. It's kind of a mix between Orbital and Katamari Damacy. They have a free demo which is pretty great.
2. Watching this movie. Just trust me. You'll like it.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I know that pressure works that way but I just can't get the idea out of my head. Another way I think about it is, when you punch someone, even though your fist and their face feel the same pressure, there is only one way they are going to go
