The snow crunches under his shoes as he walks down the familair road. The streets are empty at this time of night, except for Sesshoumaru and the girl beside him. He’s walked her home many times before, but something about the hushed, expectant Christmas Eve makes him think this walk is not like those previous.

Perhaps it’s the way the Christmas lights shone in her large bright eyes. Perhaps it is the way her nose is colored red from the cold. Whatever it is, he feels as if he was looking at her for the first time. In the few months he had been gone, off to his first year of college, she seems to have blossomed into someone he almost couldn’t recognize. Her lips seems fuller now, red and more luscious than he’s ever remembered. The curves he failed to notice before, hidden under her thick winter coat, calls to him.

She’s still the same Kagome, he thinks. She still has that smile, radiant and warm as ever. She still has that bubbly and contagious laugh. She is still the same girl he grew up with - the same one who threw mudcakes at him and his younger half-brother on their first meeting and ended up being the best friend either of them ever has.

He stops at her front door, belatedly noticing they’ve reached her home. He turns to wish her a merry Christmas, only to find a wrapped box shoved in his face. Raising an eyebrow, he takes in her pink cheeks.

“Merry Christmas,” she says, grinning at him. He takes the square box slowly, looking at her for confirmation before opening it.
“I wasn’t sure what you needed,” she mutters, biting her lips nervously. He wraps the handknit charcoal scarf around his neck before leaning close and planting a kiss on her forehead.

“Thank you,” he intones, lips quirking into a small smile only she has ever seen.

Her large, bright smile stays in his mind as he walks home, along with the feel of her warm body pressed against his and the pink blush on her cheeks. Nothing has changed, he muses, yet nothing is the same. And he rather likes it this way. He has a feeling this holiday would be one he an unforgettable one.
