I've been posting fiction on various sites for a while and figured I'd get it all together in one place. So, some of these have been on Archive Of Our Own (AO3) (as ebonyfeather), NCISfiction (as gothic-angel), fanfiction.net (as vespertine dreams), primevalarchive (as ARC_angel), or merlinfic (as dark angel). I also use Dreamwidth (as ebonyfeather ( Read more... )

You probably get asked this a lot, but I need help on lj-cuts.
I've looked around everywhere, asked other people on livejournal, looked on yahoo.answers, everywhere, but I can't get them to work.

I'm sure I've formatted it right, and it's supposed to work on Rich text, but it doesn't. When I preview the entry, the text still shows up, it doesn't show the text used to link it; it shows the entry I'm trying to hide. It's really getting frustrating.

I had a look on help, and apparently they don't work on preview entries, but I don't know the difference between that and other entries. I'm still new to livejournal, you see. I'm starting to think I'll need a paid account just to get them to work, but frankly that's money I can't afford to spend? Any help?

You don't need a paid account to make cuts work- most of the posting features are the same on free and paid accounts. It's things such as removing the advertising and extra icons etc that are the benefits of paid accounts.

LJ-cuts: When you're looking at a post as a preview, it only shows you what that entry will look like, whereas a cut only shows up when you view your journal, with all of your recent entries listed (after it's posted). The best way to try it and see if you got it right, is to set the privacy option at the bottom to 'me only'. That way, you can play about and see it on your journal with the cut, but it won't show up on your friends' pages. Then, when you're happy with it, you can edit the entry and set the privacy option back to public.

Hope that explained it a bit- if you're still unsure, feel free to message me.
