Old habits

Becker glared as Danny laughed at something the security guard who had been assisting them as they rounded up the creatures said. He couldn’t hear them from his position, but Danny’s reply made the other man beam at him, laying a hand on Danny’s arm.

“Danny! Time to go.” Dammit. That had come out a bit snappier than he’d intended.

Danny hurried to the vehicle, climbing into the passenger seat, barely getting the door closed before Becker set off.

“Could at least wait for me to get my bloody seatbelt fastened,” he grumbled.

“You just can’t help yourself, can you? Could you at least try to act professionally when we’re on a shout and not flirt with everything that breathes?”

Danny eyed him, a smile pulling at his lips. “Jealous?” he teased.

“Fuck off,” Becker muttered. It was stupid; it’d just been going out for drinks a few times, takeout and a movie, dinner. Why would he expect Danny to think it was anything more? Just because he thought… Becker squashed that thought quickly, turning his attention back to the road in front of him.

Becker had just got himself a mug of tea in the break room when he saw Danny approaching. He sighed; looked like he wasn’t going to be able to enjoy it in peace.

“I can’t help it, you know,” Danny said quietly, sitting down. “Flirting with people. Sometimes I don’t even realise I’m doing it. It was just, as a copper, it was easier to get information out of people with charm and I suppose it got to be a habit… It doesn’t mean anything; I hope you know that.”

Becker shrugged his shoulders. “Hey, it’s none of my business what you do.”

“It kind of is, though, isn’t it?” Danny told him. “I think we have a good thing going, and I’m hoping I haven’t completely buggered that up. Would it help if I told you that it wasn’t my number that I gave that guy?”

“Oh?”

“Of course not. It was Connor’s.”

Well that explained Connor’s confused expression when he was reading the text he received earlier, Becker thought with a laugh.

“I won’t do it any more,” Danny promised.

Becker rolled his eyes. “Yes, you probably will.”

“Yeah, I probably will. But I’ll try not to,” Danny told him, before asking hesitantly, “Are we still on for dinner tonight? 7:30 at Donnata’s Ristorante?”

Finishing his tea, Becker went to rinse his mug in the sink before heading for the door. As he passed by Danny, he paused.

“Yes. Don’t be late.”
